Lawsuit Filed Over Feather River School Shooting Highlights Safety Breaches

Lawsuit Filed Over Feather River School Shooting

In a significant legal move, Mary Alexander & Associates, P.C. has filed a lawsuit in the Butte County Superior Court aimed at seeking justice for four young students affected by the tragic shooting at Feather River Adventist School in December 2024. This incident has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of school safety protocols.

The lawsuit identifies multiple defendants, including the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the General Conference Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists, and the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. The plaintiffs are two kindergarten students who were shot during the incident, along with two siblings who endured substantial emotional trauma as a result of the event.

The shooting took place on December 4, 2024, when Glenn Litton managed to enter the school under false pretenses, claiming he was inquiring about enrolling his grandson. A lack of adequate supervision allowed Litton to roam freely across the campus while classes were ongoing. Disturbingly, it was reported that after their initial escort, the school principal did not ensure that Litton left the premises. Instead, he permitted him to depart unaccompanied, leading to catastrophic consequences.

Once unmonitored, Litton pursued two young kindergarteners, aged 5 and 6, into a restroom, where he opened fire, injuring both seriously. The first child suffered three gunshot wounds and is now facing significant internal challenges. Meanwhile, the second child sustained a spinal injury, resulting in paralysis of his legs and necessitating extensive medical care that included some time spent in intensive care.

Mary E. Alexander, the founder of the law firm representing the plaintiffs, emphasized the magnitude of the school’s responsibility in ensuring the safety of students. She stated, "This case is about one of the most fundamental responsibilities a school assumes when parents place their children in its care: protecting them from preventable danger." Alexander is determined to hold the school accountable for their failure to safeguard children against foreseeable threats.

The lawsuit outlined additional serious allegations against the school’s administration, stating that not only did they fail to supervise visitors adequately, but they also neglected to secure the premises effectively. The complaint reiterated that there was no established procedure to monitor or screen visitors for weapons and that the school failed to implement a comprehensive safety plan. Moreover, the complaint accentuated the need for proper training for the staff in handling campus visitors and ensuring student safety.

Mary Alexander communicated her dismay, asking critical questions about the failures of basic safeguards where young children should have felt safe. The students and their families are now left to grapple with the long-lasting impacts of this horrific event, especially considering the emotional and psychological toll that such violence can impose on young children.

The case has been filed under Does v. Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, registered in Butte County Superior Court, with the case number 26CV03397.

Mary Alexander & Associates, P.C. has a robust history of representing individuals who have suffered serious injuries due to the negligence of others. This firm’s focus on personal injury, wrongful death, and safety negligence highlights their commitment to advocating for victims’ rights throughout California.

As the legal proceedings unfold, this case will undoubtedly shine a light on the urgent need for improved safety measures within educational facilities, so that such tragedies can be avoided in the future.
