American Liver Foundation's MASH Summit: Empowering Patients and Raising Awareness

American Liver Foundation's MASH Empower and Educate Summit

On October 16th and 17th, the American Liver Foundation (ALF) brought together patients suffering from metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) for a meaningful event at the Sheraton Grand in Chicago. The MASH Empower and Educate Summit attracted 30 individuals from across the United States, a gathering aimed at enhancing understanding and awareness of liver health issues.

The ALF's objective for this summit was to educate attendees about their conditions, discussing the latest treatments and ongoing research in the field of liver disease. In addition, the event provided media training to help patients voice their experiences and promote wider awareness of liver disease across the nation.

Lorraine Stiehl, the CEO of the American Liver Foundation, emphasized the importance of such initiatives. “The MASH Empower and Educate Summit is a vital support system for caregivers and advocates living with MASH and MASLD, giving them essential knowledge to connect with others facing similar challenges,” she noted. Throughout the two days, participants engaged with medical professionals, nutritionists, and media experts through a series of presentations and panel discussions designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of their health journeys.

Among the notable speakers, gastroenterologist Dr. Christopher Kasia from the University of Chicago provided insights on recent advancements in liver care, addressing both research updates and the newest therapeutic options available for liver disease. Dr. Richard Green, also a transplant hepatologist from Northwestern Medicine, collaborated with Dr. Kasia to underline the vital role patients play in managing their health.

In another enlightening session, Nurse Practitioner Andres Castillo introduced practical approaches for integrating fitness into daily routines, awaring attendees that small alterations can make a significant impact on health. Castillo encouraged gradual changes tailored to individual fitness levels, promoting a lifestyle that supports liver health.

Additionally, Jamie Simko, a registered dietitian nutritionist, captivated participants with culinary tips for maintaining a liver-friendly diet. Her presentation focused on nutritious food choices and flavoring techniques that do not compromise health, targeting individuals at various stages of liver disease.

Mental health was also a key theme during the summit. Clinical Psychologist Anahli Patel spoke on the stigma surrounding MASH, providing foundations for patients to understand and challenge misconceptions while fostering a more compassionate view of their conditions.

One poignant session featured a panel discussion where Dr. Shawanna James-Coles, an educator and fellow MASH patient, shared her personal journey with the condition, offering practical strategies for managing health alongside diabetes and other related issues. This shared narrative underscored the resilience of individuals facing similar adversities.

The summit also prioritized the importance of media engagement. A 'Meet the Journalists' panel showcased experienced professionals from the health journalism sector, including Emmy-winning reporters and award-winning journalists. These experts shared their tips for effectively engaging with the media to further amplify the patients' narratives, thereby enhancing public understanding of liver health.

David Viggiano and Charisse Barnachea from Mekky Media conducted a session on storytelling and media coaching, emphasizing the powerful impact personal experiences can have when shared effectively with the public.

“I am immensely grateful to the panelists for their informative presentations,” said Stiehl. “Creating a community of informed individuals living with MASH or MASLD is crucial for collective growth and awareness.”

Sponsorship from Madrigal and Boehringer Ingelheim enabled this important gathering to take place, further reinforcing the ALF’s commitment to serving patients and their families across America.
