Exploring the Origins of Galaxies and Planets with GREX-PLUS at Waseda University

Discover the Universe: GREX-PLUS Seminar at Waseda University

On November 17, 2025, Waseda University's Institute for Advanced Studies in Tokyo will host a public seminar titled "The Origins of Galaxies and Planets". This event aims to bridge the gap between astronomical research and public interest by delving into the innovative Japanese space telescope, GREX-PLUS (Galaxy Reionization Explorer and Planetary Universe Spectrometer).

Event Details

  • - Date: November 17, 2025 (Monday), 10:00 AM - 11:40 AM
  • - Location: Okuma Memorial Hall, Waseda University, Nishiwaseda Campus, Tokyo
  • - Language: Japanese
  • - Admission: Free, no pre-registration required; simply come to the venue on the day.
  • - Hosted by: Institute for Advanced Studies, Waseda University

The Vision of GREX-PLUS

The GREX-PLUS mission, spearheaded by prominent researchers including Professor Akio Inoue from Waseda University, is set to launch in the 2030s. This infrared telescope is designed to unravel cosmic mysteries by observing the distant universe and providing new insights into the formation of galaxies and planets.

The seminar will feature three leading astronomers from Japan who will share their expertise and insights:
  • - Session 1: "The Beginning of Galaxies and Planets" presented by Professor Akio Inoue, focusing on the GREX-PLUS mission and its goals.
  • - Session 2: "The Beginning of Planets" by Professor Hideko Nomura of the National Astronomical Observatory, discussing recent findings in planetary formation.
  • - Session 3: "The Beginning of Galaxies" by Assistant Professor Yuichi Harikane from the University of Tokyo, presenting cutting-edge research on galaxy development.

The Role of Astronomy Today

The seminar aims to engage audiences ranging from casual night sky observers to passionate astronomy enthusiasts, students, and educators. The recent launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) by NASA has captured the world's attention by successfully capturing images of the farthest galaxies and the environments in which planets are born. This excitement surrounding astronomical discoveries brings new questions and challenges to light, and GREX-PLUS is Japan's contribution to this global endeavor of understanding the universe better.

Why Attend?

This informative seminar will allow attendees to explore their curiosities about the cosmos. Whether you are intrigued by the fundamental questions of what galaxies and planets are or interested in the technological advancements of space exploration, this event promises to offer valuable insights.

Join us in discovering the future of astronomy and the exciting potential of GREX-PLUS! The breathtaking visuals of galaxies and planets displayed during the seminar will captivate all participants.
