Jacobs Engages in Major Renewable Energy Initiative in the Philippines

Jacobs Partners with Terra Solar in the Philippines for a Groundbreaking Renewable Energy Project

In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, Jacobs (NYSE: J) has been appointed by Terra Solar Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of SP New Energy Corporation (SPNEC), to deliver a comprehensive suite of engineering services for a landmark renewable energy initiative. This ambitious project encompasses a 3,500-megawatt solar power facility coupled with a 4,500-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS), with an anticipated investment of approximately $3.3 billion (PHP 200 billion). Upon completion, the Terra Solar project is expected to provide around 12% of the Philippines' total energy requirements, marking it as one of the largest solar farms worldwide.

Jacobs' extensive involvement signifies a dedicated effort to address the Philippines' heavy reliance on coal for electricity generation. According to Jacobs Vice President Fiachra Ó Cléirigh, this project aims to drastically reduce coal dependency, cut down energy-related emissions, and facilitate the transition to a more sustainable, secure, and resilient energy infrastructure. Jacobs is set to leverage advanced digital construction management tools and drone technology to ensure efficiency in managing on-site tasks, conducting inspections, and tracking progress across the 11.5 square mile (approximately 3,000 hectares) area, located about 93 miles (150 kilometers) north of Manila.

Moreover, Jacobs will handle the logistics associated with supply chain and equipment delivery, ensuring the prompt manufacturing, inspection, shipping, and installation of millions of solar panels. This comprehensive approach is critical not just for meeting energy demands but also for pioneering a shift in the country's energy landscape.

MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen), a subsidiary of Meralco PowerGen (MGEN), which holds a controlling stake in SPNEC, expressed enthusiasm over the collaboration. President Dennis B. Jordan emphasized that the Terra Solar initiative is not only about providing clean energy but also transforming the energy industry's dynamics in the Philippines. By combining solar and battery technology, this project aims to compete with traditional energy sources while offering an economical and lower emission alternative.

Jacobs' commitment to innovating energy systems extends beyond the Philippines. The company is engaged in multiple global projects that enhance energy networks and infrastructure, contributing to the development of vibrant communities and economies. A notable project in Europe includes the Suedlink, one of the world’s largest underground power cables, while in the U.S., Jacobs plays a pivotal role as the program manager for the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES), which is establishing a statewide clean hydrogen hub in California. In Louisiana, Jacobs collaborates with PA Consulting to create a comprehensive offshore wind roadmap, identifying the best paths to harness the state's offshore wind potential.

Acknowledged for its leadership in the energy sector, Jacobs has achieved the No. 2 ranking in the areas of Power, Solar Power, and Wind Power according to Engineering News-Record in 2024. The company operates with an annual revenue of approximately $12 billion and employs nearly 45,000 individuals, providing a broad spectrum of services that span advanced manufacturing, urban development, sustainability, and more.

In summary, Jacobs’ collaboration with Terra Solar is not only a pivotal project for the Philippines but also represents a broader commitment to energy innovation and sustainability. As the world moves towards greener solutions, Jacobs is at the forefront, championing change for a connected and sustainable future.
