Akumin Launches the World’s First AXIS Imaging Center with Siemens PET-CT Technology

Akumin Launches Groundbreaking AXIS Imaging Center

On December 2, 2024, Akumin Inc., a prominent name in radiology and oncology services, made a significant leap in medical imaging by showcasing the first-ever Akumin AXIS Relocatable and Expandable Outpatient Imaging Center at the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting (RSNA). This cutting-edge facility aims to address critical challenges in the imaging and oncology landscape, primarily focusing on enhancing patient access to quality care.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the Akumin Booth (#6158) in the North Hall, featuring notable representatives including Krishna Kumar, CEO of Akumin, and Jim Bertrand, SVP of Siemens Healthineers' North America Imaging Sales. The spotlight was on Akumin AXIS, which is designed and manufactured in the U.S. to fulfill the growing demands of outpatient imaging and radiation therapy.

What is Akumin AXIS?

Akumin AXIS is a state-of-the-art Outpatient Imaging Center equipped with a variety of advanced modalities, including PET-CTs, linear accelerators, and soon-to-come MRIs. The facility boasts a spacious layout that allows for high-volume scanning, featuring three dedicated rooms for tracer and theranostic infusions, which are essential for the emerging field of radioligand therapies.

The opening unit includes the Digital Biograph Trinion PET-CT scanner from Siemens Healthineers, which has garnered attention for its innovative air-cooled design. This design not only optimizes imaging precision but also enhances clinical outcomes, setting a new standard in the industry.

Addressing Key Challenges in Healthcare

The AKUMIN AXIS's debut has sparked significant interest at RSNA, with attendees recognizing its potential to mitigate three major challenges faced by health systems: the high capital costs of technology acquisition, long construction timelines, and staffing shortages. The modular nature of the AXIS center facilitates efficient service expansion, directly improving access to top-quality healthcare services.

Krishna Kumar stated, "We are thrilled to introduce the world's first Akumin AXIS, paired with our Akumin Radiology Command Center at this year's RSNA. This innovation not only broadens the horizons of healthcare delivery but also directly addresses pressing operational challenges faced by hospitals today. The enthusiastic response we've garnered from attendees reinforces our commitment to enhancing patient access to advanced imaging and oncology services."

Collaboration with Siemens Healthineers

The partnership with Siemens Healthineers is pivotal for the success of the Akumin AXIS. John Khoury, GM and VP of Siemens Healthineers' Molecular Imaging and Theranostics, North America, affirmed that the Biograph Trinion PET-CT scanner complements the AXIS vision by providing excellent precision and operational cost efficiency. With such collaborations, healthcare providers gain access to transformative solutions that can enhance patient outcomes significantly, as well as develop new care pathways through innovative technology.

Experience the Innovation

For those attending the RSNA conference, the Akumin team is offering daily guided tours of the AXIS center until December 4th, providing a first-hand look at this groundbreaking innovation in healthcare. Visitors can witness how Akumin AXIS represents the future of imaging and oncology care. To learn more or to book a tour, attendees are encouraged to visit the Akumin booth (#6158).
