Freedom House Welcomes New Leadership

On June 25, 2025, Freedom House announced the selection of Gerardo Berthin and Annie Boyajian as its new presidents. The decision was made by the executive board, chaired by Norman Willox. Berthin and Boyajian previously served as interim copresidents since January, guiding the organization through tumultuous times for global freedom and democracy.

According to Willox, the increasing boldness of authoritarian forces has made the mission of Freedom House more critical than ever. He emphasized the need for strong leadership as the organization faces significant challenges in its mission to expand and protect freedom around the world. Gerardo Berthin and Annie Boyajian, with their extensive experience and unwavering commitment to nonpartisan integrity, are positioned to lead Freedom House effectively during this pivotal period.

Experience and Commitment

Gerardo Berthin has been with Freedom House for the past five years, where he led the international programs division, the largest segment of the organization. With nearly three decades of experience, Berthin has worked in over 50 countries focusing on democratic governance, anticorruption efforts, and strengthening civil society. His previous roles include senior positions at prominent organizations, such as Tetra Tech and Casals Associates, as well as significant contributions to the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

In his words, "It is a privilege to lead this organization with Annie... It is because of [our team] that Freedom House continues to set the standard for first-class research and effective advocacy."

Annie Boyajian, who brings a decade of experience at Freedom House, has served as vice president of policy and advocacy and is recognized for her work in engaging with governments and multilateral organizations. She has been a vocal advocate for human rights and has played an instrumental role in legislative efforts like the Global Magnitsky Act. Her advocacy stretches across multiple fronts, including human rights issues in regions such as China, Hong Kong, and Ethiopia.

"For more than eight decades, Freedom House has been a trusted voice in the defense of freedom around the world. It is an honor to lead this organization with Gerardo, and together, we have ambitious plans ahead," Boyajian stated.

Looking Ahead

Under Berthin and Boyajian's leadership, Freedom House aims to enhance its global influence and continue its work of informing the public about threats to freedom and mobilizing actions in support of democracy. One of their immediate goals is to raise $10 million by the end of the year. They plan to unveil several exciting initiatives in the upcoming weeks, demonstrating their commitment to expanding Freedom House’s impact in the field of global rights and freedoms.

As they take on their new roles, both leaders express immense gratitude for the support they have received from the board and their team, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in the ongoing fight for freedom and democracy.

Freedom House stands at a crucial junction, with Berthin and Boyajian set to navigate the organization through the challenges ahead, championing the causes of freedom and democracy globally.

Ultimately, their shared vision and robust expertise underscore a promising future for Freedom House, reinforcing its status as a leading monitor and advocate for human freedom worldwide.
