Waseda University and Industry Collaborate to Advance Battery Education for Future Workforce

Introduction to the Battery Industry

As the world moves towards a carbon-neutral society by 2050, the significance of the battery industry has never been more critical. To ensure that Japan remains at the forefront of this rapidly growing sector, Waseda University and the Battery Association for Supply Chain (BASC) have joined forces to introduce an innovative educational program titled "Introduction to the Battery Industry: Envisioning the Future of Japan's Battery Sector." This collaborative initiative, launching in April 2026, aims to cultivate talent that will drive the future of the Japanese battery industry and support its essential role in electrifying vehicles and advancing renewable energy.

Objectives of the Course

The primary goal of this course is to create a comprehensive platform for learning about battery technology, from foundational concepts to the latest advancements in the field. By leveraging the expertise from academia, government, and industry, students will gain a structured understanding of the battery supply chain and the business aspects of these technologies. The result will be a new generation of skilled professionals ready to take on challenges in the growing battery industry, which is increasingly vital to achieving carbon neutrality.

Curriculum Overview

The program will be structured over seven sessions, each featuring guest speakers who are experts in various fields related to battery technology. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including the latest trends in battery business, resource management, manufacturing practices, and recycling initiatives. The curriculum is designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity and deepen students' interest in aligning their own professional skills with the battery sector.

A Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Waseda University has been at the forefront of carbon neutrality efforts, exemplified by its declaration in 2021 of the "Waseda Carbon Net Zero Challenge." This commitment encompasses cutting-edge research and talent cultivation aimed at realizing a carbon-neutral society. Following the establishment of the Carbon Neutral Society Research and Education Center in 2022, Waseda has enhanced its educational offerings by implementing a minor in Carbon Neutral Leadership starting in the 2022 academic year. Additionally, from 2024, a similar minor will be available for graduate students, ensuring that the connection between industry and academia thrives.

Future Aspirations

BASC plays a pivotal role in advancing human resource development through various initiatives, including the recent establishment of the "Battery Advanced Talent Outreach Network (BATON)." This network aims to enhance Japan's competitiveness in the battery and related industries by fostering a diverse range of learning opportunities. By utilizing the educational model established at Waseda University, BASC intends to expand these initiatives to universities and educational institutions across the country.

The launch of "Introduction to the Battery Industry" is not only a significant step for Waseda University but also a critical move toward boosting interest in the battery sector among students and nurturing a new generation of battery professionals who will elevate the entire supply chain's competitiveness. Together, Waseda University, BASC, and industry stakeholders are committed to shaping a robust future for Japan's battery industry.
