AARP Pennsylvania Celebrates Voter Support for PhillySaves Retirement Initiative

AARP Pennsylvania Celebrates Passage of PhillySaves

AARP Pennsylvania is thrilled to announce the successful passage of the PhillySaves initiative, thanks to overwhelming support from voters in the recent primary election held on May 19. With nearly 80% approval, this landmark decision sets the stage for enhancing retirement savings for workers throughout Philadelphia.

The PhillySaves program aims to increase access to retirement savings plans, especially for those who typically lack employer-sponsored options. By enabling a more accessible savings pathway, Philadelphia residents are taking a significant step toward achieving long-term financial stability.

Bill Johnston-Walsh, the State Director for AARP Pennsylvania, expressed gratitude toward the Philadelphia electorate, stating, "We are thankful to the voters for recognizing the need for improved savings opportunities for workers. PhillySaves embodies a proactive strategy to empower thousands of individuals in securing their financial futures."

This initiative is particularly meaningful in a city where many workers—especially those in lower-wage jobs—struggle to save for retirement. The ease of automatic payroll contributions will help foster a culture of saving, encouraging individuals to take control of their financial well-being.

The legislation was signed by Mayor Parker, and Council President Kenyatta Johnson and Councilmember Mike Driscoll played pivotal roles as co-sponsors, securing its passage and placing it on the ballot. Johnston-Walsh praised local leadership for their commitment, noting the importance of collaboration in bringing the initiative to fruition. "Local leadership matters, and today we see the impact of dedicated public officials who support working families in Philadelphia," he added.

With over 208,000 workers in Philadelphia now slated to benefit from PhillySaves, the focus will soon shift to implementation. AARP Pennsylvania is committed to ensuring that both individuals and small businesses understand the new system and the advantages it presents.

As the initiative moves forward, AARP Pennsylvania will continue to engage with city leaders and local partners to guarantee a smooth transition and successful launch of the PhillySaves program. This initiative is more than a policy change; it represents a broader commitment to enhancing the financial landscape for older adults and working families. AARP Pennsylvania advocates for financial security for every individual, and this victory is a stepping stone towards that goal.
