SpartanNash Welcomes Jay Mahabir as Vice President of Retail Operations

Jay Mahabir as Vice President of Retail Operations, effective immediately. In this pivotal role, Mahabir will oversee retail functions across nearly 200 SpartanNash-operated grocery stores stretching across 10 different states.
Mahabir's primary focus will be to enhance the in-store and online shopping experiences for both Associates and customers alike. With his extensive background in retail operations, he is expected to contribute substantially to SpartanNash's ongoing commitment to providing excellent customer service and operational excellence.
In a statement from
Djouma Barry, Senior Vice President and Chief Retail Officer, it was emphasized that Mahabir's role is crucial to advancing SpartanNash’s mission of improving shopping experiences. “We will continue to enhance our shopping experience by concentrating on freshness, value, and convenience, and Jay will play a critical role in leading this work,” Barry affirmed. Additionally, Mahabir will be instrumental in developing talent within the organization, ensuring Associates can pursue various career opportunities available within the SpartanNash family.
Before joining SpartanNash, Mahabir held the position of Market Director at
Meijer, where he successfully managed two of the highest-volume markets in Michigan. His leadership experience extends to store-level roles at
Lowe's and
Target, where he received accolades for high rates of Associate retention, customer service excellence, and successful shrink reduction initiatives.
SpartanNash itself has experienced significant growth in its retail sector, having acquired
Metcalfe's Market,
Fresh Encounter Inc., and
