Tokyo's Innovative Startups Tackle Carbon Credit Creation for 2024

In a bold initiative to tackle climate change, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is hosting an intermediate report meeting on its Carbon Credit Creation Promotion Project. This project aims to leverage the city's natural resources to absorb and remove CO2, effectively generating carbon credits. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from the most dynamic startups engaged in this crucial sector, who will present the latest updates on their efforts to create carbon credits in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries.

The event is set to take place on April 24, 2024 (Friday) from 14:00 to 15:50 at the TKP Tokyo Station Otemachi Conference Center, Hall 22F. Additionally, it will be accessible online to maximal participation. Doors will open at 13:40, welcoming all companies, organizations, municipalities, and residents of Tokyo who have an interest in carbon credits. Best of all, admission is free!

Agenda Highlights

  • - An introduction to the overarching project and its goals
  • - A mini-seminar conducted by the project’s administrative office
  • - Intermediate reports from selected startups that have been awarded funding for the 2024 fiscal year

Featured Startups And Their Innovative Projects

Several startups that are making significant strides in carbon credit creation will present their findings:

1. Forestry - Stellar Green Co., Ltd.

Stellar Green is utilizing satellite data alongside AI corrections to optimize the creation of forest credits. Their approach not only reduces costs and labor associated with carbon credit creation but also highlights the value added through visualizing underground water retention in forests.

2. Agriculture - TOWING Co., Ltd.

TOWING focuses on enhancing cultivation through the application of “Sorbent,” an innovative material that reportedly improves crop yield. Their study looks into not only the agricultural impact but also how leveraging carbon credits could elevate the market value and pricing of agricultural products, along with effective customer communication regarding environmental values.

3. Fisheries - BLUABLE Co., Ltd.

BLUABLE is aiming to expand blue carbon creation by implementing a method that allows seaweed to be anchored in deep waters without decomposition. This innovative technique seeks to assess the amount of carbon fixation achieved through seaweed, the ecological impacts of this process, and the creation of blue carbon credits.

Project Overview

The overarching goal of the initiative is to cultivate innovative ideas and technologies from startups within the agricultural, forestry, and fisheries sectors that can effectively contribute to the absorption and removal of CO2. Selected startups will receive financial support, covering up to ¥40 million in project-related expenses, and benefit from continuous support by project promoters throughout the duration of the project, which spans from fiscal year 2023 to 2024.

What Are Carbon Credits?
Carbon credits represent the verified amounts of greenhouse gas emissions reduced or absorbed, which can then be traded among companies. This verification is conducted by third-party organizations to ensure credibility and effectiveness. It is a vital mechanism to advance decarbonization efforts effectively. The reduction and absorption of greenhouse gas emissions are often measured in terms that reflect carbon dioxide equivalency, denoted as t-CO2. On average, a household in Japan emits approximately 3.5 t-CO2 of greenhouse gases annually.
