Seaspan and Hapag-Lloyd Unveil Methanol Conversion Success

In a significant development towards sustainable shipping solutions, Seaspan Corporation, recognized as a leader in maritime asset management, and Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's prominent container shipping lines, have announced the successful completion of their first ship conversion under the CleanBlue modernization initiative. This conversion marks a critical milestone in their collective efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance efficiency in marine operations.

The upgraded vessel, named Seaspan Yangtze, is the first of five ships set to undergo transformation in this innovative program, which aims to switch vessels to operate on low-carbon methanol. Each conversion is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by approximately 30,000 to 50,000 metric tonnes per vessel annually.

Bing Chen, Chairman and CEO of Seaspan, articulated the essence of decarbonization by stating, “It is not just about building the fleet of tomorrow, but unlocking the full potential of the current fleet. Modernizing existing vessels represents a practical, immediate, and cost-effective approach to accelerate decarbonization in the maritime sector.” He emphasized the successful partnership Seaspan has established with clients, leveraging extensive technical expertise and collaborative platforms to execute large-scale modernization projects.

Hapag-Lloyd’s General Fleet Manager, Silke Lehmköster, also underscored the importance of this initiative, stating, “The successful conversion of Seaspan Yangtze and the planned upgrades of its sister ships represent a significant step on our ambitious journey towards operating a net-zero fleet by 2045.” Through collaboration with Seaspan, Hapag-Lloyd is demonstrating that adapting existing ships to low-carbon methanol can be an effective strategy for reducing emissions within the maritime transport sector.
