As technology continues to evolve, so does the field of programming. The 9th Annual Kitaku Children's Programming Contest is set to ignite the creativity of young minds starting August 15, 2026. Organized by the NPO Programming Education Institute and the Kitaku Board of Education, this contest encourages elementary and middle school students living or studying in Kitaku, Tokyo to showcase their programming skills.

A Full House at Summer Programming Workshops

This summer, the free programming workshops held at Kitabia have reached full capacity, which highlights the growing interest among children in programming. These workshops have become a platform for children to craft unique programming projects while aiming to enter the contest. Using tools like micro:bit and servo motors, participants are diving into their creative processes, learning to create games, robots, and more.

The workshops aim for more than just a basic introduction to programming; they focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and the process of creation. Children are encouraged to experiment, leading to a cycle of trial and error, where they learn from their challenges. Comments during the sessions like “This could be more fun!” or “Why isn't it working as I expected?” underscore the active thinking that takes place as they refine their ideas for submission.

A Revamped Contest Application Site Leveraging Generative AI

This year, the contest features a newly revamped application website, creatively constructed with the help of Generative AI and using cutting-edge technologies like GitHub, Vercel, and Supabase. This significant enhancement makes the submission process smoother for participants and allows them to learn about modern web development.

Traditionally, developing web services required specialized programming knowledge. However, with the integration of Generative AI, individuals can now easily bring their ideas to life through dialogue with the AI, turning concepts into operational services rapidly.

Open Source Philosophy: Learning Transparency

In an innovative move, the contest organizers have made the source code of the new application site available on GitHub. This transparency not only serves to educate kids about programming but also invites parents, teachers, and curious individuals to explore how web applications function. By enabling them to see the underlying structure of the site, the initiative aims to inspire them to consider taking on similar projects themselves.

Judging Criteria That Celebrate Creativity and Effort

Notably, the contest does not focus solely on technical proficiency. It evaluates entries based on originality, skill level appropriate to the age, effort put into the work, and a thoughtful improvement of experiences or tools for others. This broad evaluation scope means that all kids, regardless of their programming experience, are encouraged to participate. The previous installment of the contest saw 31 entries ranging from the intriguing “Train Conductor Simulator” to creative robots for delivery, showcasing the breadth of imagination among young programmers. Participants brought a spectrum of ideas to the table, not limited to games but also involving simulations, quizzes, learning tools, and problem-solving solutions.

This year, we anticipate a rich variety of entries as more students build on their ideas cultivated during summer workshops and home projects.
