Conrad Challenge 2026-2027: Igniting the Spirit of Innovation

As we embark on another exciting academic year, Space Center Houston and Equinor proudly announce the launch of the 2026-2027 Conrad Challenge on August 27. This year's challenge invites young innovators from across the globe to explore and develop ideas that could potentially transform our everyday lives. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this esteemed competition focuses on encouraging students aged 13 to 18 to tackle real-world problems through the lens of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

A Platform for Young Innovators

The Conrad Challenge is more than just a competition; it is a nurturing ground for young minds eager to make a significant difference. Participants can enter in five distinct categories: Aerospace and Aviation, Cyber-Technology and Security, Energy and Environment, Health and Nutrition, and Water. Each category reflects pressing global issues that require innovative solutions.

Teams comprising two to five students will work diligently to refine their original ideas, crafting entrepreneurial cases and receiving invaluable feedback from seasoned industry experts. This hands-on experience not only builds their skills but also instills confidence as they prepare to showcase their innovations at the Conrad Challenge Innovation Summit set to take place at Space Center Houston in April 2027.

A Legacy of Innovation

Founded in 2007 by Nancy Conrad in memory of her late husband, NASA astronaut Charles “Pete” Conrad, the Conrad Challenge embodies a legacy of adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit. “Every breakthrough in history began with a question and a person bold enough to pursue the answer,” shared Daniel Newmyer, Chief Learning Officer at Space Center Houston. Through this challenge, students are given the unique opportunity to turn curiosity and creativity into groundbreaking innovations.

Nancy Conrad further emphasized the importance of youth involvement in innovation, stating, “Pete believed innovation wasn't reserved for adults; it belonged to anyone with imagination and courage.” Her passion for fostering young talent is evident in the ever-growing participation numbers; last year's challenge saw more than 8,000 students from over 70 countries contribute their innovative projects.
