BD and Envetec Launch Groundbreaking Recycling System for Healthcare Plastics

In a significant advancement towards sustainable healthcare practices, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) and Envetec Sustainable Technologies have successfully completed a feasibility study showcasing closed-loop recycling solutions for laboratory plastics. This project addresses a critical sustainability issue in the medical industry by assessing the potential for recycling widely used materials, such as polystyrene Petri dishes, PET tubes, polypropylene syringes, and other medical plastics.

The pilot study, conducted in collaboration with BD, revealed that after thorough disinfection and processing, these high-quality polymers can be recycled into valuable raw materials. Traditional waste management methods in healthcare often lead to these plastics ending up in landfills, posing long-term environmental challenges. The new initiative aims to transform this situation by creating a viable recycling pathway for at least several types of plastics currently utilized within healthcare supply chains.

At the heart of this project is Envetec's innovative GENERATIONS® technology, which allows for the conversion of regulated waste into clean, recyclable polymer flakes using a low-energy chemical disinfection process. The study utilized unused BD BBL™ prepared plated media as post-industrial material, shredding and separating the components to produce sanitized polymer flakes, which were later extruded into polystyrene pellets to form new Petri dish prototypes; all necessary material property tests confirmed the feasibility of this process.

Malcolm Bell, CEO of Envetec, expressed optimism about the pilot's results, stating, "This marks the first step toward showcasing the recyclability of various plastic products in the health sector. By establishing a proof of concept, we are optimistic about the future of sustainable materials management, which can mitigate landfill contributions while maximizing resource circulation."

The potential benefits of this program are vast. As Nikos Pavlidis, worldwide president of BD's Diagnostic Solutions division, highlighted, “The presence of single-use devices made from these materials is crucial in modern healthcare for ensuring safety and effectiveness.” Nonetheless, he acknowledged the environmental implications of high plastic usage. This pilot relies on BD's Sustainable Medical Technologies Institute and aims to form a path toward circular economies within healthcare, targeting not only laboratory plastics but also other widely consumed medical products like syringes and blood collection tubes.

Envetec’s GENERATIONS technology is already being utilized in various sectors, including biopharma, healthcare institutions, and even food and beverage industries across Europe and the United States. This innovative solution processes medical waste on-site, effectively converting it into clean polymer flakes ready for recycling. The goal is to shift towards a circular recovery model, replacing less environmentally friendly waste management options like incineration and landfilling.
