A recent survey conducted by MAZDA revealed some startling statistics about traveling with dogs:
- - 44% of dog owners have experienced their pets getting car sick, and 73.3% of dogs showed signs of illness on trips lasting up to 90 minutes.
- - Dogs who get car sick might trigger further discomfort due to certain behaviors by their owners, which underscores the need for awareness among drivers.
The upcoming Dog Cafe aims to enhance a culture of providing a comfortable travel experience for pets and their owners, encouraging more enjoyable trips together.
Survey Insights
MAZDA's "Dog Outing Realities Survey" highlighted several key findings:
1.
Experiences of Car Sickness: 44% of drivers reported their dogs have experienced car sickness, revealing the common challenges faced by dog owners on the road.
2.
Preventive Measures: The most common preventive action taken by drivers to avoid car sickness is ensuring adequate breaks. However, nearly half of the participants admitted to engaging in behaviors that could worsen the situation, indicating a clear need for proper education on this matter.
3.
Traveling with Dogs: About 51.3% of respondents shared that they had to cancel travel plans due to concerns for their pet's well-being, emphasizing the deep level of care owners have for their dogs.
Expert Advice on Managing Car Sickness
As per veterinarian Dr. Takamori Sato, dogs are generally more prone to motion sickness than humans. This heightened sensitivity can lead to discomfort during car rides. Common symptoms include excessive drooling, restlessness, or vomiting. Recognizing these signs early can greatly alleviate distress for both owner and pet.
To combat car sickness, Dr. Sato recommends gradually acclimatizing dogs to car rides, starting with short distances, and ensuring a smooth driving experience. Key actions when dogs do show signs of distress include pulling over to a safe area and allowing the dog to breathe fresh air, which can help reset their nervous system.
