Hornblower Group Welcomes Stephen A. Edwards as New CEO
Hornblower Group, recognized as North America's foremost provider of ferry transportation infrastructure, has announced the appointment of Stephen A. Edwards as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026. He will take over from Mike Flaskey, who is transitioning to a senior advisor role both at Hornblower and with its partner, Strategic Value Partners (SVP).
A Seasoned Leader in Marine Transportation
Stephen Edwards brings a wealth of experience to his new role, characterized by his impressive career in the marine transportation sector. He has previously operated as CEO at the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) since January 2021, where he oversaw substantial achievements including the completion of a $1.4 billion capital investment program. Under Edwards’ leadership, the VPA achieved impressive growth in volumes, revenues, and operational hours. Notably, during his tenure, the port attracted significant port-centric industrial development to Virginia and successfully renegotiated the lease for critical terminal facilities.
Prior to his role at the VPA, Edwards demonstrated his capabilities by leading other major firms in the industry such as TraPac, Global Container Terminals, and Ports America. Each of these positions bolstered his insight into high-performing team building, operational excellence, and the nurturing of strategic public-private partnerships.
Future Vision for Hornblower Group
Edwards expressed enthusiasm about his new position, stating, "Hornblower Group is known for partnering with local and national authorities to provide water transportation services to North America's leading public attractions and commuter routes. I am eager to begin working with its talented team to build on this legacy, enhance operations, facilitate innovation, and deliver extraordinary service to our guests and communities."
David Geenberg, Head of Corporate Investments, North America at SVP, remarked on Edwards' leadership qualities: "Stephen is an exceptional leader, known for his commitment to continuous improvement of commercial and operational performance. He is well positioned to lead Hornblower as it continues to build upon its franchise as the leading water transportation infrastructure provider in North America."
Edwards’ strategic vision aligns with Hornblower Group’s mission of delivering high-quality ferry services to popular attractions including Niagara Falls, the Statue of Liberty, and Alcatraz, alongside operational services in major U.S. cities. Moreover, Hornblower’s entertainment division, City Cruises, offers curated dining and sightseeing experiences.
A New Era for Hornblower Group
The transition to Edwards as CEO marks a significant step for Hornblower Group as it aims to maintain and expand its leadership role in the water transportation sector. The company, which serves over 20 million guests annually, emphasizes excellence in service delivery while fostering a commitment to innovation.
In conclusion, as Stephen A. Edwards embarks on this new journey as CEO, the industry watches with anticipation how his extensive experience and strategic approach will shape the future of Hornblower Group. His previous successes are setting a promising stage for the company, ensuring it continues to meet the evolving needs of its guests and the communities it serves across North America.
