Toy Foundation's Major Initiative Delivers Joy to Kids in Need on International Day of Play

Giving Play a Chance: The Toy Foundation's Remarkable Impact

On June 11, 2026, The Toy Foundation™, the charitable arm of The Toy Association™, celebrated the third annual United Nations International Day of Play. This year's event, aptly themed "Protect Play, Protect Childhood," witnessed an unprecedented display of generosity from the toy industry, collecting $5.7 million in donated toys for children in need around the globe. The Foundation's efforts resulted in an impressive 90% increase in the number of children impacted compared to the previous year, with over 450,000 kids set to benefit from this remarkable initiative.

The Importance of Play

The International Day of Play, recognized by the United Nations, emphasizes the vital role of play in the development, well-being, and education of children. According to Pam Mastrota, Executive Director of The Toy Foundation, this year's emphasis on protecting children's right to play underscores a fundamental aspect of healthy childhood development. By rallying support from varied partners, The Toy Foundation aims to ensure that every child, regardless of circumstances, has access to the joy of play.

Donations Driving Change

Through Toy Chest, an industry-wide giving initiative, the Foundation successfully gathered play products from nearly 20 contributing companies. These included renowned brands like Amazon, Hasbro, LEGO, and The Pokémon Company, all of whom stepped up to donate a range of toys, games, ride-on vehicles, and more. This collaboration not only highlights the compassion inherent in the toy industry but also showcases its capacity to make a substantial difference in the lives of disadvantaged children.

Partnerships for a Purpose

In tandem with the toy donations, The Toy Foundation activated two significant fundraising campaigns in June with Chuck E. Cheese and the Build-A-Bear Foundation.

  • - Play with a Purpose at Chuck E. Cheese: Throughout June, families visiting over 400 Chuck E. Cheese locations could donate $5 at checkout, receiving 500 tickets for use toward prizes. This initiative allowed families to have fun while contributing to the cause. Additionally, special limited-edition thinking putty was sold to further raise funds.

  • - A Week of Play with Build-A-Bear: Running from June 8 to 14, this campaign invited shoppers to make donations of varying amounts at checkout. Every dollar raised directly supported The Toy Foundation's mission to deliver essential play resources to children in need.

The Year-round Efforts of The Toy Foundation

The Toy Foundation is dedicated to its mission beyond just one day of the year. Since its inception in 2003, the organization has directly supported a staggering 38 million children worldwide through toy donations and impactful grant-making initiatives. Its ongoing dedication ensures that play remains accessible to the youngest and most vulnerable members of society.

Join the Movement

As organizations and individuals alike rally to support this cause, The Toy Foundation continues to seek partnerships and engagement from companies of all sizes. The collective impact made by the toy industry serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we prioritize play in childhood development.
