A Journey Through Kyoto: Rediscovering Local Charm
On July 4th, a special workshop titled "Let's Go See the Light of the Town and Daily Life" is set to take place in Kyoto's historic Kawaramachi district. This event, co-hosted by Omotena and Chapter Kyoto Tribute Portfolio Hotel, invites both locals and travelers to explore the intersection of community living and tourism.
This workshop isn’t just another guided tour; instead, it offers a distinctive perspective on experiencing Kyoto by walking through the streets and enjoying the beauty of everyday life from the viewpoint of local residents. Participants will engage in street walking, storytelling, and map-making activities, uncovering the hidden gems that contribute to the daily vibrancy of the neighborhood.
Kawaramachi is rich with historical significance, associated with figures from the Meiji Restoration era and sprinkled with culinary delights from local eateries. Notably, it also serves as a backdrop for the NHK drama "Kyotoites' Secret Enjoyment," which adds a layer of cultural exploration to the event.
Guests at the workshop will include the Akimoto sisters, Misako and Mikiko, who moved from Hokkaido to Kyoto, bringing their love for the local drama and culture with them. They will share their insights and experiences about life in Kawaramachi, contributing to a collaborative atmosphere where participants can exchange ideas and personal stories about the town.
Omotena, the local help matching service, operates under the motto "Let’s Enjoy Japan's Local Wonders More!" Since initiating its services in Kyoto in 2022, it has encouraged travelers to connect with locals and delve deeper into cultural experiences. This workshop emphasizes sustainable tourism, highlighting the balance between benefiting the community, enhancing traveler experiences, and preserving local charms.

The day's activities are designed to promote understanding between residents and visitors. The first part will involve a lunch at the hotel where participants can reflect on the charms of Kawaramachi while enjoying a unique culinary experience featuring seasonal Kyoto ingredients. The Akimoto sisters will lead discussions to produce a collective map of favorite local spots, setting the stage for an enriching afternoon of exploration.
The second half of the day will focus on self-guided exploration, as participants will be encouraged to roam the Kawaramachi area using the maps they created. Along the way, they can savor the local ambiance and, at the end, regroup for tea and dessert back at the hotel to share their discoveries.
This workshop not only promotes community interaction but also aims to reinterpret what sustainable tourism means for both residents and visitors. As overtourism poses challenges to global tourist hotspots, Omotena advocates for initiatives that promote authentic local engagement, allowing tourism to flourish without harming the community.
The essence of Kyoto's daily life can transform into an unforgettable travel experience if we take a moment to collect and appreciate the local beauty. Join us in rediscovering these small yet significant local gems that make Kawaramachi a vibrant community.
