FamilyMart’s Commitment to Sustainable Logistics and Food Waste Reduction

FamilyMart’s New Initiative in Niigata: A Sustainable Approach to Logistics

As FamilyMart approaches its 45th anniversary in September 2026, the company remains committed to five core principles, championing initiatives that aim to be the most environmentally friendly in the retail sector. One recent effort includes optimizing its logistics operations in Niigata, where approximately 1,300 stores will transition from three daily deliveries to just two by June 9, 2026.

The changes aim to sustain product quality while significantly reducing food waste and lowering CO2 emissions. This shift allows for the introduction of chilled and frozen rice balls and bento meals tailored to local preferences, not only enhancing sales opportunities but also contributing to minimizing food waste.

A Look Into Supply Chain Reform

The logistics sector is currently grappling with a shortage of drivers and rising raw material and energy prices. To adapt to these challenges, FamilyMart has leveraged its proprietary rice cooking technology to prolong the shelf life of rice products. Having already moved to a two-delivery system for about 550 stores in the Hokuriku area in September 2025, FamilyMart is now set to implement this strategy in the Tohoku region, thereby enhancing logistical efficiency and lowering transportation distances.

By optimizing the supply chain, FamilyMart is focused on cost control while continuing to offer valuable products and maintaining reliable supply to its franchise partners. This efficient logistics framework also aims to mitigate food waste and cut down on carbon emissions.

Key Aspects of the Initiative

  • - Start Date: Deliveries will shift to two per day starting June 9, 2026.
  • - Included Products: The initiative encompasses over 800 items including onigiri (rice balls), sushi, bento boxes, bread, side dishes, and desserts.
  • - Target Regions: This optimization applies to Niigata and six prefectures in the Tohoku region including Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Miyagi, Yamagata, and Fukushima.
  • - Delivery Change: The number of daily deliveries will reduce from three to two, with a focus on improving delivery times and optimizing routes.
  • - Environmental Impact: The reduction to a two-delivery system is expected to decrease total mileage by approximately 6.7 million kilometers per year and cut CO2 emissions by around 30%.

Supporting Franchisees and Store Operations

By reducing the number of deliveries, FamilyMart aims to ease the workload associated with receiving goods at stores, contributing to better operational efficiency and optimal staff management across franchise locations. The cost savings generated from this logistical efficiency will be reinvested into promotional support to boost sales and customer engagement.

Additionally, FamilyMart is incorporating a tool for order support that adapts to individual store sales patterns, paired with guidance from supervisors to ensure a smooth transition.

Exciting New Product Offerings

In line with this operational evolution, FamilyMart will introduce region-specific chilled bento boxes, as well as frozen onigiri and bento options.
