Launch of B-Axis Machining Project by Tungaloy and Genetec
In an exciting new endeavor, Genetec Co., Ltd., based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and Tungaloy Corporation, a major manufacturer of cutting tools from Iwaki, Fukushima, have initiated a collaborative project focusing on B-axis machining using Mastercam. This innovative project not only showcases advanced machining techniques but also aims to highlight the product and technological prowess of both companies through a series of video presentations.
Understanding B-Axis Machining
The primary goal of this partnership is to produce and share videos demonstrating the B-axis machining process for creating chess pieces. B-axis machining involves continuous control of the angle of the tool (the B-axis) during the machining process, allowing for the efficient finishing of complex shapes with continuous curved surfaces. This method significantly reduces machining time, minimizes setup changes, and eliminates the need for special tools, offering numerous advantages for manufacturers.
The chess pieces chosen for this project embody the complexities that make B-axis machining ideal. Their cylindrical bases, smoothly transitioning curves, and intricate decorative elements require optimally tuned tool positioning to achieve a high-quality finish. By employing Tungaloy’s cutting tools alongside the 3D CAD/CAM system Mastercam, Genetec aims to shorten production times while maintaining surface quality, all of which will be illustrated in the accompanying explanatory videos.
Video Schedule and Product Showcase
The planned series of videos will showcase the creation of chess pieces and boards, with the videos for the king and queen pieces set to release in October. These videos will be available on Genetec’s website, YouTube channel, and Tungaloy's YouTube channel, making them easily accessible to a broad audience.
Additionally, the finished chess pieces will be displayed at the Mecatronics Tech Japan 2025 event, scheduled for October 22 to 25, 2025, at Port Messe Nagoya, where attendees can explore the products up close.
Future Prospects
Moving forward, Genetec plans to release a series of videos focusing on the production process of the chess pieces and board, aiming to visualize the often-overlooked charm of manufacturing environments. This collaboration is not merely an exploration of machining techniques but also a commitment to ongoing technical challenges and improvements that will contribute to enhancing productivity in the manufacturing sector.
