Kansai's First Initiative on Local Consumption-based Furusato Tax in Kaizuka City

Kaizuka City Launches 'Tetsu-furu': A First in the Kansai Region

In a groundbreaking move for the Kansai region, Kaizuka City in Osaka has become the first municipality to implement the local consumption-based 'Tetsu-furu' initiative, designed to energize local economies through railway tourism. Managed by Yomiuri Travel's subsidiary, Yomiuri Travel Publishing, this project represents a unique approach to furusato tax donations.

What is 'Tetsu-furu'?

'Tetsu-furu' is a comprehensive project aimed at revitalizing regions with railways by encouraging visits to these areas and promoting local shopping. Participants can contribute to the furusato tax program via a dedicated website, and in return, they receive digital gift vouchers worth up to 30% of their donation. These vouchers can be used at affiliated local stores, offering the flexibility to purchase anything from railway-related merchandise to local specialties and unique railway experiences.

A Look at Mizuma Railway

Mizuma Railway, which runs through the central part of Kaizuka City, is a crucial transport link for residents and a well-known means to reach the revered Mizuma Temple, famous for its protective Kannon deity. As Mizuma Railway approaches its 100th anniversary on December 24, 2025, the 'Tetsu-furu' initiative is expected to attract not only railroad enthusiasts but also a broader audience eager to explore Kaizuka City.

Among the benefit options available through the digital gift vouchers are a one-day free pass with a prayer at Mizuma Temple and train driving experience sessions, making it an enticing opportunity for visitors to immerse in local culture and history.
