Atelier Seiran at the 61st Venice Biennale
Atelier Seiran is set to participate in the 61st International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, presenting their exhibition titled
"La Raíz de la Vida" or
"The Root of Life". This presentation is part of the official parallel event,
"Fisuras de Luz", organized by the Tissali Arts Cultures Association, and will take place at the historic
Palazzo Dona dalle Rose from
May 5 to November 22, 2026.
A Legacy of Indigo
Located in Tokushima, Japan, Atelier Seiran has a remarkable history of almost 50 years, specializing in the traditional craft known as
Awa Ai, or Awa Indigo. This art form emphasizes sustainable craftsmanship that resonates with contemporary artistic expressions. Founded in 1970 by
Yoko Hashimoto, the studio emerged during a time when synthetic dyes threatened traditional craftsmanship. By developing a unique wax-resist dyeing technique, Atelier Seiran redefined indigo dyeing, turning it into a contemporary art language that transcends the boundaries of craft.
Conceptual Foundations of the Exhibition
The exhibition at Palazzo Dona dalle Rose will delve into the cultural and historical 'cracks' that reveal creative potential. Atelier Seiran's
"The Root of Life" interacts with this theme, evoking a primordial realm where nature, time, and existence connect through the rich, deep blues characteristic of Awa Ai.
A highlight of Atelier Seiran's presentation is a collaboration with Cameroonian artist
Serge Mouangue. This partnership invites audiences to explore shared expressions of life and energy across cultures, juxtaposing Cameroonian symbolic traditions with the cyclical and nature-based philosophy embodied in Awa Ai.
