Energy Fuels Secures Approval for Terbium Oxide from Major Japanese Manufacturer



In a significant step for the rare earth elements industry, Energy Fuels Inc. has announced that its terbium oxide has been approved for commercial production by one of the largest manufacturers of rare earth permanent magnets (REPM) in Japan. This approval comes as Energy Fuels aims to further its capabilities in the production of both light and heavy rare earth oxides, essential for a range of advanced technologies.

The approval marks a milestone for Energy Fuels, as the Japanese manufacturer confirmed that the terbium oxide produced at the company's White Mesa Mill in Utah meets the required specifications with no additional qualification needed. This qualification is a clear endorsement of Energy Fuels’ high-quality product standards and showcases its robust processing capabilities in the rare earth materials sector.

Ross Bhappu, President and CEO of Energy Fuels, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "This latest qualification of Energy Fuels' heavy rare earth oxides marks another significant milestone in establishing a secure, diversified supply chain for critical rare earth materials." He further noted that the approval highlights the value of Energy Fuels' products in the automotive, electronics, aerospace, and defense industries, where high-performance materials are crucial.

Terbium oxide is particularly valuable for its role in enhancing the heat resistance and efficacy of high-strength neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets, which are widely used in various advanced technologies. Given its scarcity and the limited production of terbium in Western regions, the current market price for terbium oxide stands at an impressive $5.5 million per tonne, as reported by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

Previously, Energy Fuels had announced the successful qualification of its neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) and dysprosium (Dy) oxides for use in manufacturing rare earth permanent magnets. With these qualifications, the company is poised to become a dominant player in the rare earth supply chain.

Looking ahead, Energy Fuels anticipates becoming the leading vertically integrated producer of rare earth permanent magnets in both the U.S. and Europe. This will be facilitated by the expected completion of its acquisitions of Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) and Vacuumschmelze (VAC). The NdPr, terbium, and dysprosium oxides manufactured at the White Mesa Mill are expected to be integral components of the company’s operations moving forward.

Energy Fuels is not only a major U.S. producer of rare earth elements but also a leader in uranium production and other critical materials. Located in Lakewood, Colorado, the company operates the only fully licensed conventional uranium mill in the U.S., situated in Utah. In addition to its rare earth products, Energy Fuels is also assessing the potential recovery of medical isotopes for cancer therapies.

With several other projects in the works, including sites in Madagascar, Brazil, and Australia, Energy Fuels is strategically expanding its reach in the global market for critical minerals.
