Shanghai Electric Launches Major Efficiency Upgrade to Bolster Iraq's Energy Sector

Shanghai Electric Enhances Iraq's Energy Landscape with Significant Upgrades

In a pivotal move to address Iraq's chronic electricity shortages, Shanghai Electric has officially launched the Euphrates Combined Cycle Expansion Project. This ambitious initiative aims to convert simple-cycle power plants into advanced combined-cycle systems across four Iraqi governorates, significantly boosting capacity and efficiency in the energy sector.

Key Details of the Project

The project is set to add a remarkable 625 megawatts (MW) to the existing electrical output, which translates into an impressive 50% increase in plant efficiency—enabling the generation of an additional 5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per year without needing additional fuel. This upgrade will provide Iraq with much-needed relief from persistent electricity shortages, a concern that has plagued the nation for over thirty years.

According to a spokesperson for Shanghai Electric, “The urgent need for energy security in Iraq is evident, and we are proud that our efficient combined-cycle technology is viewed as essential in enhancing this critical infrastructure.” The company emphasizes its commitment to supporting energy security and green development initiatives in Belt and Road countries through innovative technological solutions.

Background on Iraq's Energy Crisis

Iraq, being a significant oil producer in the Middle East, has faced severe power shortages primarily due to its dependence on natural gas, which poses a challenge since domestic gas production is insufficient. Consequently, the nation has relied heavily on imports, creating a significant impediment to both daily life and broader economic recovery efforts following years of conflict.

The expansion project, situated along the Euphrates River, will impact the governorates of Najaf, Karbala, Babylon, and Al-Qadisiyyah. Notably, this conversion project showcases a collaborative effort between Chinese and Iraqi teams, with core equipment already arriving onsite as construction progresses.

Strategic Importance

Iraqi Minister of Electricity Ziad Ali Fadel has lauded the strategic importance of this project, stating, “This initiative holds substantial significance for enhancing Iraq's power supply and optimizing its electricity infrastructure. Once operational, it will markedly lessen Iraq's reliance on imported natural gas and decrease fuel costs for generating power.”

The implementation of the combined-cycle upgrade at the Najaf power plant involves innovative use of high-temperature exhaust from existing gas turbines. This exhaust is routed through heat recovery steam generators to create high-pressure steam, which then drives a new steam turbine to generate additional electricity. This unique approach increases both output and efficiency without compromising fuel consumption, thus minimizing thermal pollution as well.

Naseem Ayad, the project manager on the Najaf site, shared insights about the advances, explaining, “Utilizing Chinese equipment and power technology enables us to effectively recycle high-temperature exhaust, boosting generation capacity while diminishing thermal pollution. This project sets a high standard for power plant upgrades in Iraq and is a reflection of local expectations for reliable electricity and improved living conditions.”

At the Karbala site, the arrival of high-tech equipment like heat recovery steam generators and direct air-cooled condensers marks an important milestone. This phase is notable as one of Iraq's first contributions to the combined-cycle expansion utilizing fully Chinese equipment and standards, aiming to elevate the recognition of Chinese technology abroad.

Future Implications

Upon completion, the Euphrates Combined Cycle Expansion Project is expected to enhance local livelihoods, bolster post-war reconstruction efforts, and lay a solid energy foundation for Iraq's industrial revival and economic growth. Shanghai Electric remains devoted to promoting sustainable development in regions along the Belt and Road, leveraging advanced and eco-friendly energy technologies.

In summary, this project stands as a beacon of hope for Iraq's power infrastructure, addressing urgent needs while setting the stage for long-term energy resilience. Through such initiatives, Shanghai Electric exemplifies its role as a transformative partner in revitalizing essential services within the country.
