Shanghai Electric and Its Commitment to Biodiversity
On May 22, 2025, Shanghai Electric celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity, emphasizing its commitment to ecological harmony and sustainability. The theme for this year's event,
Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development, encapsulates the company’s goal to integrate biodiversity protection into its global engineering projects. From the deserts of Dubai to the forests of Romania, and the coastlines of Selangor in Malaysia to Yumurtalik in Turkey, Shanghai Electric is on a mission to support global biodiversity through community collaboration, innovative technology, and international partnerships.
Leading with Environmental Responsibility
As a premier energy equipment manufacturer and a provider of green engineering solutions, Shanghai Electric incorporates biodiversity considerations into the high-level design of its projects worldwide. The company actively assesses vulnerable local species and implements proactive measures to mitigate the environmental impact of its operations. This includes creating ecological balance and safeguarding biodiversity within project areas while regularly reviewing the effectiveness of these initiatives.
Dubai: Blazing Trails in Biodiversity Protection
In Dubai, the company is spearheading a solar thermal project that established a robust biodiversity protection system before construction commenced. This initiative included identifying habitats for sensitive species and setting operational limits using fences and designated pathways. Added to this, a cleaning effort was initiated in 2024 in collaboration with municipal authorities, which educated employees on local ecosystems and led to an organized desert cleanup. This project exemplifies Shanghai Electric's dedication to environmental stewardship in the region.
Romania: Renewable Energy with a Green Conscience
In Romania, the photovoltaic project in Skurtu is designed with careful considerations for local forests. Cables connecting the northern and southern blocks are routed around a small forest area, and road construction is adjusted to avoid agricultural lands. Positioned in Teleorman County, this 56.03 MWp project is expected to supply green energy to approximately 48,000 households while significantly reducing annual carbon emissions by 4,150 tons, showcasing Shanghai Electric’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection across various global projects.
Turkey: Innovations in Energy and Conservation
Constructed in Turkey at a biodiversity hotspot, the Hunutlu thermal power plant uses state-of-the-art, low-emission technology that minimizes dust, sulfur, and nitrogen emissions, ensuring no wastewater is discharged into the Black Sea. The facility includes advanced systems for treating and recycling wastewater for uses such as agricultural irrigation. During its construction phase, protective measures for turtles were prioritized, including a dedicated volunteer team responsible for beach cleanup and facilitating nesting conditions, illustrating the company’s commitment to both biodiversity and ecological responsibility.
Malaysia: Advocating for Marine Life
In October 2024, the project team for a renewable energy plant in Selangor actively participated in a beach cleanup coordinated by the Malaysian Ministry of the Environment. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about coastal pollution impacts on marine biodiversity. Alongside this engagement, the team promoted Shanghai Electric’s environmental and workplace health policies, highlighting its focus on green and smart energy solutions. Their efforts in advocating for environmental safety were recognized with multiple environmental protection certificates from local authorities, solidifying the company’s role in promoting sustainability and responsible development in the region.
Looking Ahead
As Shanghai Electric transitions into 2025, it remains steadfast in its commitment to biodiversity, having launched several successful campaigns in 2024 focusing on industrial development's harmonious coexistence with environmental conservation. The company plans to leverage its expertise in clean technologies and eco-friendly manufacturing to further promote the concept of harmony with nature and sustainable development.
