Huawei's Tech4Nature Mexico Project Wins GSMA Global Mobile LATAM Award for Jaguar Conservation

Huawei's Tech4Nature Project: A Milestone in Jaguar Conservation

Huawei has received the prestigious GSMA Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM Award for its remarkable project, Tech4Nature, focused on the conservation of jaguars in Yucatán, Mexico. This recognition highlights the project's significant contributions to environmental protection through the use of technology. The award was presented at the M360 LATAM 2026 conference, underscoring the importance of innovative solutions for addressing critical conservation challenges.

The Power of Technology in Conservation

Launched in 2022, the Tech4Nature project is a collaboration between Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It utilizes advanced technological tools to monitor and protect the jaguar's habitat, a key species facing extinction in the region. Samira Herrera, Huawei Mexico's Head of Communication and Public Relations, stated, "This recognition reflects the power of technology when it is aligned with the service of people and the planet. Tech4Nature Mexico exemplifies how cross-sector collaboration can create tangible positive impacts on communities and biodiversity conservation."

The project is currently in its second phase and involves partnerships with the Yucatán state government, local community members in Dzilam de Bravo, and various organizations, including C Minds and the Polytechnic University of Yucatán (UPY). This collaboration has resulted in a multifaceted approach that combines AI-driven species identification and monitoring, community-led oversight, and cross-sector teamwork.

Achievements in Wildlife Monitoring

Through the installation of 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices, the project has successfully identified over 147 species, including 40 that are endangered. Notably, it has also recognized 16 individual jaguars, providing crucial data for understanding their behavior, movement patterns, and necessary conservation measures. These initiatives are vital for maintaining the ecological balance of their habitat.

Huawei's cloud-based technology plays an essential role in processing and analyzing field data. The project has collected 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings, all automatically analyzed to enhance the monitoring of local wildlife and its ecosystems. These data-driven insights contribute to a more profound understanding of the ecosystem, leading to informed decisions for biodiversity protection that extends into public policy.

Furthermore, substantial strides have been made in expanding the conservation area from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares, illustrating the project's broader environmental impact.

A Sustainable Model for Conservation

The Tech4Nature Mexico project exemplifies a sustainable model of scientific conservation that marries technological innovation with community involvement. Wireless connectivity solutions from Huawei are a pivotal aspect of the environmental data transmission within Tech4Nature initiatives, a theme that resonated during the M360 LATAM 2026 conference.

This event brought together regional and global leaders from the tech ecosystem, mobile networks, government sectors, and related industries to discuss the potential of technology in forging a better future for all. The GLOMO LATAM Awards celebrate the changemakers redefining technology, connectivity, and social progress across the region.

By receiving the award for the Tech4Nature Mexico project, Huawei reiterates its commitment to using technology as a tool for building a more sustainable and inclusive future, advancing projects that contribute to environmental protection and community development.

Conclusion

Since its inception, Huawei and the IUCN's Tech4Nature partnership has aimed to scale up conservation successes through technological innovation. In line with Huawei's TECH4ALL initiative, Tech4Nature has supported 13 projects across 11 countries, providing tailored solutions to various conservation challenges. This remarkable endeavor showcases how technology can significantly influence the conservation landscape and bring about tangible benefits for the environment and society.
