Evonik Expands Its Capabilities in Drug Delivery



Evonik Industries, a prominent global leader in specialty chemicals, has recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art, GMP-certified manufacturing facility in Vancouver, Canada. This strategic investment, exceeding 150 million CAD (approximately 93 million EUR), is driven by the soaring demand for lipid-based medicinal products, including vaccines and advanced therapies. With financial support from the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund amounting to 68 million CAD (about 42 million EUR), the facility aims to bolster Evonik’s production capabilities while creating high-quality jobs in the region.

Lauren Kjeldsen, Executive Board member and Chief Operations Officer of Evonik’s Customized Solutions segment, explained, “Lipid-based drug delivery technologies are paving the way for the next generation of therapeutics. This investment leverages our extensive experience in the field, enabling the development and commercialization of transformative therapies.”

Significantly Increased Production Capacity



The new plant is set to more than triple Evonik’s current production capacity for advanced pharmaceuticals. It features enhanced quality control and microbiological analysis capabilities, ensuring efficient and timely release of clinical products. “Vancouver is a dynamic hub for life sciences innovation, and Evonik’s Health Care division is excited to grow within this ecosystem. This investment strengthens both our regional presence and global network for lipid-based drug delivery,” commented Guido Skudlarek, head of Evonik’s Health Care business line.

British Columbia has emerged as Canada’s fastest-growing life sciences sector, employing nearly 20,000 individuals in over 2,000 companies concentrated around Vancouver. The University of British Columbia has played a pivotal role as a catalyst for innovation, contributing to the creation of numerous biotech startups.

A Strong Commitment to Innovation



Mélanie Joly, Canada’s Minister of Industry, emphasized, “Evonik’s expansion in Vancouver underscores Canada’s leadership in biological sciences and innovation. This investment will drive advancements in lipid-based drug delivery, create highly skilled jobs, and further bolster the growing biotech ecosystem in British Columbia.”

Evonik's history in lipid-based drug delivery dates back to the 1990s, with their Vancouver Laboratories, previously called Transferra Nanosciences and Northern Lipids, providing CDMO services for advanced lipid nanoparticle (LNP) and liposome systems. This facility allows for comprehensive solutions from formulation research to clinical manufacturing under GMP standards.

Market Growth Outlook



Looking ahead, the market for lipid nanoparticles is projected to reach 2.7 billion USD by 2034, showing an increasing trend driven by the growth of nucleic acid therapies. Lipids play a critical role in encapsulating and delivering nucleic acid-based medications. The role of lipid nanoparticles was prominently showcased during the COVID-19 pandemic, validating their importance in modern medicine.

Evonik’s network for developing and manufacturing lipid formulations extends globally, connecting operations from Vancouver to several key locations, including Birmingham, Dossenheim, Hanau, Boston, and Lafayette. This integrated network combines lipid chemistry expertise, LNP formulation, process engineering, and regulatory knowledge, supporting clients through the entire product lifecycle from development to commercial supply.
