IHG Hotels & Resorts Introduces Japan's First Regent Resort
IHG Hotels & Resorts, a prominent player in the global hotel industry, has recently revealed plans to open Japan's first Regent resort in Karuizawa. This upscale development, named "Regent Karuizawa," is set to become a luxurious retreat boasting 58 unique guest rooms and villas upon its expected opening in 2028.
The design of this new establishment will be spearheaded by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma, who aims to harmonize the architecture with the rich natural surroundings, including forests, hot springs, and the breathtaking views of Mount Asama. Regent Karuizawa promises to deliver a one-of-a-kind sanctuary that reflects the essence of the globally celebrated Regent brand, catering to guests seeking tranquility and refined modern luxury.
Abhijit Sandilya, Managing Director of IHG Hotels & Resorts Japan and Micronesia, expressed his excitement about the introduction of Regent Karuizawa into IHG's portfolio. He noted that this marks an important milestone not only for the growth of the Regent brand in Japan but also globally.
"Karuizawa is known for its excellent access from Tokyo, along with its lush natural environment and relaxing atmosphere," Sandilya stated. "The Regent brand is ideally suited for this location, creating an immersive destination that harmonizes serenity, exploration, and luxury. By providing guests with a seamless experience, we aim to establish a new standard of luxury hospitality in the region."
He also highlighted that inbound tourism to Karuizawa has increased by 30% since 2019, indicating a rising interest among international visitors. Regent Karuizawa will meet this growing demand by offering genuine cultural experiences within a luxurious environment.
Complementing the upcoming Regent Kyoto, which is also under construction, Regent Karuizawa will contribute to IHG's expanding portfolio of luxury and upper-luxury properties. It will showcase the allure of the Regent brand to potential owners looking to develop comparable world-class facilities in various urban and resort locations across Japan.
The resort is expected to feature diverse dining experiences, including a specialty restaurant with views of the valley, meeting spaces, a signature spa and wellness center, and a fitness gym. These amenities aim to provide a comprehensive and fulfilling stay for guests.
Karuizawa, a prestigious highland resort area, is an attractive destination throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy scenic waterfalls, rich nature, and the charming streets of Old Karuizawa, along with convenient access to ski resorts and remarkable golf courses. It is known for being an imperial retreat, attracting affluent vacation home buyers, all while being just about an hour away from Tokyo via the Shinkansen.
Together with Hotel Indigo Karuizawa, also located in Nagano Prefecture, Regent Karuizawa will offer a broad range of experiences suitable for all travelers.
Currently, IHG operates 55 hotels across ten brands in Japan, with a further pipeline of 17 properties expected to open in the near future. Regent Karuizawa will be the second hotel under the Regent brand in Japan, following the anticipated launch of Regent Kyoto in 2028.
