Exploring the Life of Tamiki Hara in 'Eternal Green'
The acclaimed theater company Bunkaza is set to unveil its New Year performance titled "Eternal Green of Tamiki Hara" from February 12 to February 23, 2026, at the scenic Theatre Alpha Tokyo located in the vibrant Shibuya district of Tokyo. Tickets are currently available for purchase through Konfetii, which is managed by Longrun Planning Co., Ltd., based in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
This emotionally compelling production delves into the life of Tamiki Hara, a poet deeply affected by the tragic atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The performance marks a poignant moment in 2025, which commemorates both the 80th anniversary of the bombing and the centennial celebration of Hara's birth. This narrative not only reflects on Hara’s struggles but also the loving support from his wife, Sadae Nagai, and the camaraderie with those who cherished him.
The play is a unique collaboration between renowned writer Hisayuki Sugiura, known for his powerful works like "Mother" and "Life is Treasure", and the adept director Jin Umiyama. They aim to bring forth the essence of Hara's gentle, introspective spirit and his challenges as a person trying to navigate a world clouded by trauma and the shadows of war.
The narrative revolves around the annual gathering known as the “Hanagenki no Kai” on March 13, a memorial event dedicated to honoring Tamiki Hara. However, as participants dwindle each year, the mood turns somber. The story is unveiled through the eyes of the writer Shusaku Endo, who portrays his growing concern about Hara's legacy. With a brief yet profound life, Hara lived just a few kilometers away from the epicenter when the bomb was dropped, and he later expressed the horrors of that day in his literary work "Summer Flowers".
Despite being known for his extreme introversion and social anxiety, Hara’s literary talents were recognized and nurtured by his peers. The unconditional love of his wife contributed significantly to breaking his barriers, allowing him to embrace the world that once felt alien to him. Yet, the realities of his existence weigh heavily on him, leading to moments of profound reflection.
