Launching a Recycling Initiative for Dermal Medicine Containers
In an unprecedented move towards sustainability, three leading pharmaceutical companies in Japan are collaborating to introduce a unique recycling program aimed at collecting and repurposing used dermatological medicine containers. This initiative marks a significant step in fostering a circular economy, addressing the growing waste problem associated with plastic and aluminum drug containers.
The three partners, Shionogi Healthcare Co., Ltd., Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare Co., Ltd., and Tanabe Mitsubishi Pharma Corporation, officially launched the program on September 15, 2023. Designed to operate in selected drugstores across Osaka Prefecture, this innovative initiative allows consumers to return empty dermatological medicine containers, including plastic bottles and aluminum tubes, for recycling. A total of 16 drugstores are participating in this eco-friendly program, creating a platform for responsible waste disposal.
Details of the Recycling Program
The program is scheduled to run from September 15, 2023, and will accept used containers from any brand, regardless of where they were purchased. This inclusive approach aims to encourage widespread participation among consumers, thereby enhancing the overall impact of the initiative.
Special collection boxes have been strategically placed in the participating drugstores, which include multiple locations operated by mik japan and Akakabe. These boxes not only facilitate the collection process but also reward participants with points that can be donated to charitable organizations or exchanged for eco-friendly products, promoting a sense of community involvement in sustainability efforts.
Unique Features of the Program
1.
A Collaborative Model: This program exemplifies the power of collaboration among pharmaceutical giants, marking a significant step towards a sustainable future that benefits both the environment and society.
2.
First-of-its-kind Initiative: With this program, Japan will see the first systematic collection and recycling of dermatological containers, including commonly used aluminum tubes. This effort underscores the commitment of the involved companies to promote resource circulation and contribute to a sustainable society.
3.
Consumer Participation: By incentivizing consumer involvement, the program aims to foster a culture of sustainability. Participants will earn points for their contributions, which serve as a tangible reward for taking part in the recycling effort.
Recycling Process
Once collected, the returned containers will undergo sorting, shredding, washing, and recycling processes to convert them back into usable raw materials. The ultimate goal is to reuse these materials to create new products, thus closing the loop in the waste management cycle and supporting a circular economy.
