Enhancing Emergency Response: How the Czech Fire Rescue Service Utilizes LiveU Technology

In a pivotal move to improve response times and operational command, the Czech Fire Rescue Service has integrated cutting-edge video technology by LiveU, transforming its emergency operations protocol. The deployment of LiveU's video-over-bonded-IP technology enables firefighters to replace traditional voice communications with real-time video intelligence. This advancement has been credited with significantly shortening the duration of fire response, particularly in wildfire situations where conditions change rapidly.

The innovative solution was rolled out through LiveU’s partnership with Smart Informatics. This collaboration provided essential equipment, including the LU-REQON1™ and LU800 units, which communicate seamlessly with drone operators equipped with thermal imaging cameras, as well as stationary PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras positioned throughout incident sites. All video feeds are transmitted in real-time to the National Operational Center in the Czech Republic, allowing on-site commanders and senior officers to manage operations directly from their locations.

A major test of the system occurred during a recent wildfire in Bohemian Switzerland National Park, where over ten LiveU units were employed in an extensive operation involving approximately 2,581 firefighters and various specialized equipment, including drones and helicopters equipped with Bambi buckets for aerial firefighting. The operation successfully contained the fire over a ten-day period, with the rescue service attributing a portion of this success to the timely video intelligence provided by LiveU’s technology.

Previously, the lack of high-quality video transmission in remote areas with poor mobile coverage posed significant operational challenges for the Fire Rescue Service. The need for real-time situational awareness became starkly evident following a larger wildfire event in 2022, prompting the service to seek a more effective technical solution. The deployment of LiveU marks a significant evolution in public safety technology in the Czech Republic, setting a precedent for situational awareness across Europe.

Col. Jiří Studnička, Head of the Communications Department at the General Directorate of the Fire Rescue Service, emphasized the impact of the new system: “Before LiveU, our decision-making was mostly based on voice communication over the radio. Now commanders can see exactly what is happening in real-time from every point at the incident. This heightened situational awareness has greatly improved our speed and accuracy—an advantage that is crucial in emergency response.”

One of the remarkable features of LiveU units is their ability to bond various connectivity types, including 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi, and Starlink satellite. This capability ensures continuous video transmission, even in cases where one or more networks might fail or become congested in challenging terrains, ensuring operational resilience across diverse environments such as national parks and disaster zones. The strategic flow of live feeds allows commanders to maintain oversight from mobile devices, tablets, or desktops while remaining engaged with the incident.

As articulated by Roni Weinberg, VP of Public Safety at LiveU, “First responders must have certainty in their operations. The transition from voice descriptions to live visual data from the scene can mean the difference between measured reactions and informed decisions. The Czech Fire Rescue Service exemplifies how reliable broadcast-grade solutions enhance mission-critical operations.”

Tomáš Veselý, Managing Director at Smart Informatics, noted the profound responsibility that accompanies integrating technology into public safety. “When lives are at stake, the stakes are undeniably higher than in broadcasting. It’s a matter of delivering solutions that have a direct impact on whether people return home safely.”

With reliable connectivity becoming non-negotiable for emergency services, this project illustrates how resilient multi-network video transmission can offer first responders continuous visibility. This technological innovation not only aids in quicker, better-coordinated responses but also ultimately strives to protect lives and bolster community safety.
