Encouraging Young Chefs: ZEN-NOH's Cooking Class for Children in Shinjuku
On July 31, ZEN-NOH (the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in Japan) hosted an engaging cooking workshop in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This event marked the beginning of the new year for the program and was designed specifically to empower children with disabilities through the joy of cooking. Eighteen students ranging from second graders to high schoolers from the Shinjuku Ashitakai facility participated in this exciting culinary experience.
In this workshop, the participants aimed to foster a deeper understanding of domestically produced agricultural and livestock products while learning essential life skills. With the help of culinary instructors and facility staff, the children prepared delicious recipes using a range of ingredients provided by ZEN-NOH and its group companies. The cheerful atmosphere filled the kitchen as they cooked dishes packed with nutrition, emphasizing the importance of both food and agriculture.
This initiative, which has been running since 2016, has reached its milestone 20th session, with a total of 321 children benefiting from it. The event encouraged kids to try their hand at cooking dishes like savory pancakes known as 'チヂミ' (Chijimi), as well as stir-frying seasonal vegetables and meats. Armed with newfound skills and teamwork, the students enjoyed the fruits of their labor, joyfully exclaiming, "We ate until we were full!" and “The dessert was delicious!".
Feedback from the facility staff was equally positive, with one remarking, "Perhaps because they made it themselves, the kids ended up eating more vegetables than expected. Thank you for this fun experience!" This reflects ZEN-NOH's commitment to not only teach culinary skills but to encourage a healthy relationship with food.
The Joy of Cooking
The cooking class was well-organized, featuring an exciting menu that included:
- - Easy Bibimbap (フライパンで簡単ビビンバ)
- - Zucchini Egg Chijimi (ズッキーニのたまごチヂミ)
- - Savory Cabbage and Chicken Meatball Soup (キャベツと鶏だんごの旨塩スープ)
- - Strained Yogurt (水切りヨーグルト)
These dishes were meticulously crafted with ingredients sourced from various ZEN-NOH group companies. For instance, ZEN-NOH Pearl Rice provided rice, cooking oil, and rice flour; while other partners supplied fresh vegetables and high-quality meats.
In addition to the hands-on cooking experience, attendees received goodie bags containing culinary essentials and ZEN-NOH branded items, further enhancing their learning experience.
