Sustainable Fair at Kohoku TOKYU S.C.
Kohoku TOKYU S.C., a community-focused shopping destination in Tsuzuki Ward, Yokohama, will host its fifth Sustainable Fair on August 2-3, 2025. This special event is designed to foster collaboration between local manufacturers and the community while promoting sustainability.
The Tsuzuki Ward has been proactive in supporting small to medium-sized manufacturing businesses, coining the term “Made in Tsuzuki” to showcase high-quality local products. The purpose of the Sustainable Fair is to educate attendees on the significance of local business while encouraging a sustainable lifestyle. By engaging the community, the event aims to inspire residents to feel more connected to their neighborhood, thereby encouraging them to remain within the area.
Since its inception in November 2021, the Sustainable Fair has successfully incorporated hands-on workshops that captivate both children and adults. Participants have shared their excitement, stating, “I had a great time using tools to create things I usually can’t make,” and “It was fun for the whole family to engage together.”
For this year’s event, the format will incorporate collaboration with the shops within Kohoku TOKYU S.C. This is a pioneering initiative that focuses on upcycling artwork. Participants will have the opportunity to create art pieces using foam materials that have been discarded from local retail outlets and the manufacturing processes of regional companies. Specifically, around 2 kilograms of foam from two participating stores and approximately 1.8 kilograms from local manufacturers will be utilized, significantly reducing waste and CO2 emissions—estimated at about 11.78 kilograms. This aligns perfectly with the “Tokyu Malls Development Sustainability Action,” which advocates for a transition towards a decarbonized society.
The workshop details are as follows:
- - Dates: August 2nd (Saturday) and 3rd (Sunday)
- - Time: 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM (with approximately 30 minutes for each experience)
- - Location: 1F Event Space, Building A
- - Eligibility: Open to elementary school children and older; younger children can participate with parental assistance
- - Capacity: 60 attendees per day
- - Cost: Free of charge
- - Registration: Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:45 AM on the event days.
Participating stores include Gap/GapKids, Kojima x Bic Camera, Nitori, and Right-On, while local companies such as Ademka, Core Electronic Systems Co., and the NPO Telework Center Yokohama are contributes to the success of this initiative.
Past workshops have seen tremendous enthusiasm, with parents and children bonding over the creative process, further solidifying the event's role in cultivating a sustainable mindset in the community.
In summary, the Sustainable Fair at Kohoku TOKYU S.C. is more than just an event; it’s a movement promoting sustainability and local craftsmanship. The event continues to emphasize the importance of community engagement, creating a harmonious relationship between local businesses and residents.
