AI Search Partners Conducts In-Depth Study on AI Car Selection Strategies in Japan
In a recent study by TechSuite, a startup headquartered in Tokyo, the company’s AI Search Partners initiative has conducted a detailed analysis focusing on how AI tools assist consumers in selecting vehicles in Japan. This investigation aims to gauge how different AI platforms generate responses when users inquire about vehicle purchases and which manufacturers are suggested based on specific criteria.
Study Background
As more consumers turn to AI for guidance in choosing vehicles, understanding the recommendations provided by these systems has become increasingly important. Previous analyses have grappled with the opacity surrounding how AI platforms arrive at their answers. This study does not aim to evaluate specific manufacturers; instead, it compiles and records the nature of responses generated by the AI. By examining the queries that consumers commonly make regarding car purchases, TechSuite sought to highlight the industry trends reflected in these AI recommendations.
Key Findings
1.
Domestic Manufacturers Dominate Responses
The analysis revealed a tendency for AI responses to predominantly feature major Japanese automotive manufacturers. Roughly 54% of all mentions were concentrated among the top three manufacturers, while about 73% were represented by the top five. Specific names have been withheld in this report.
2.
Limited Mention of Imported Vehicles
Interestingly, when examining responses concerning imported cars, particularly premium German brands and electric vehicle (EV) specialists, their representation fell below 10%, indicating a notable bias favoring domestic models in AI suggestions.
3.
AI's Citing Behavior
The study uncovered that AIs tend to provide multiple manufacturer options in their answers. For instance, the most prolific AI mentioned manufacturer names in 80% of its responses, with the lowest at 56%. On average, responses included between 2.68 to 4.00 manufacturers, demonstrating a trend towards listing options rather than recommending a single choice.
4.
Source of Information
An astounding 97% of the information sources referenced by AI were from third-party media, showcasing a preference for external content, such as used car information platforms and vehicle comparison sites. In stark contrast, only about 2% of the cited information came from manufacturers' official websites, implying that for AI to recognize a brand, visibility across third-party channels is crucial.
Study Details
The targets of this study included prominent AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode, focusing on data gathered as of September 2026. A total of 175 AI responses were analyzed from 25 specific queries relating to vehicle selection.
The metrics evaluated involved the frequency of certain automotive manufacturers and the URLs of referenced sources, which were compiled at the manufacturer level rather than by individual car models.
