Cybertrust's iTrust: Revolutionizing Online Identity Verification
Cybertrust Inc., headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, has announced that its
iTrust identity verification service has been adopted by
Liquid, marking a significant advancement in online security practices. Starting September 30, 2025, the mdoc acquisition feature along with the mdoc verification service API will be implemented within Liquid's services to streamline identity verification processes.
Understanding mdoc Technology
mdois the cutting-edge digital identification technology defined by the international standard ISO/IEC 18013-5. It allows users to securely store their My Number Card data in mdoc format on their smartphones, facilitating identity verification and attribute certification without the need for a physical card. This innovative technology enhances the efficiency and reliability of identity checks compared to traditional methods.
The
mdoc verification service API enables service providers to manage and decode encrypted data, thus simplifying the implementation process. By integrating this API, Liquid's online identity verification service,
LIQUID eKYC, allows users to authenticate themselves seamlessly using their smartphone’s digital wallet feature. Cybertrust plays a critical role in managing the necessary keys for data decryption and signature verification, ensuring that operational costs are minimized while maintaining high security standards.
Background of the Adoption
As the use of mobile devices in various fraudulent activities rises, Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has taken action by revising laws concerning identity verification by mobile communication operators. Formulated changes to enhance online identity checks will come into effect on April 1, 2026. According to these new regulations, verification via IC chip reading of identification documents like driver's licenses or My Number Cards will be mandatory.
In anticipation of this shift, a new policy will enable identity verification using magnetic records as a substitute for physical cards, recognized by Japan's Anti-Money Laundering Act and Mobile Policy from June 24, 2025. Initially, this feature will be compatible with iOS, with Android support anticipated by the fall of 2026.
Cybertrust and Liquid have been collaborating in providing identity verification services since 2021. With the latest adoption of the mdoc verification API in
LIQUID eKYC, smartphone users will be able to complete identity verification for various online services without relying on a physical My Number Card or confidential numbers.
This innovative implementation aims to enhance user experiences significantly. Service providers adopting LIQUID eKYC will benefit from a fast and secure means to leverage My Number Card information stored on smartphones. This seamless integration will facilitate activities such as opening bank accounts and more, leading to increased convenience for both users and service providers.
