Minesto Advances Tidal Energy with Hestfjord Dragon Farm Developments for 2024
Minesto Takes Major Steps for Hestfjord Dragon Farm
Minesto, a leader in ocean energy solutions, has recently completed the technical specifications for its Hestfjord Dragon Farm, drawing on valuable insights from the successful commissioning of the Dragon 12 system. After four months of connected operation, this autumn has seen the company focus on evaluating performance metrics, refining operational protocols, and planning selective upgrades for the 10 MW project slated for the Faroe Islands.
Enhancements Based on Performance Analysis
Key to Minesto's latest progress is the collaboration with DNV, an independent expert who conducted a comprehensive technology review. This review has provided critical feedback which has empowered Minesto to optimize its approach. The assessments have confirmed that the Hestfjord location features excellent tidal flow conditions, ensuring a promising environment for their innovative power technology.
According to the specifications, the core hardware configuration of the Dragon 12 will largely remain intact, but with an essential upgrade: an increased generator capacity that will now produce 1.75 MW. Coupled with this adjustment, alterations to the kite’s wing profile and a longer tether length have been highlighted to significantly enhance energy production efficiency.
Operational Cost Optimization
Moreover, advancements in service and maintenance strategies have been designed for both onshore and offshore operations. This scaling up not only aims to enhance reliability but is also projected to lower operating costs. Minesto is also leveraging proven solutions regarding subsea cables and transformer configurations, thereby minimizing complexity and reducing the need for additional technological development.
“The findings from our research lead to two pivotal conclusions. Firstly, we can provide the most affordable ocean energy available at our primary array setup; and secondly, we have identified an ideal tidal site for our technology,” explained Dr. Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto.
Continued Development in Vestmanna
Minesto has not paused its operational trajectory in Vestmanna either. Ongoing improvements in launch and recovery procedures are underway, aimed at preparing for larger operations involving multiple kites. Recent trials with the Dragon 12 have yielded improved methods for deploying their kites, vital for maximizing offshore asset management.
In conjunction with these advancements, preparations are being made for new small-scale systems destined for microgrid customers. This effort includes further operations and upgrades to seabed infrastructure that will enhance the effectiveness of future Dragon systems capable of generating up to 200 kW.
Manufacturing Innovations for Greater Depths
An exciting development is the 15% extension of the tether for the Dragon 12 project, set within the marine license for Vestmanna. Minesto is currently producing this new tether in anticipation of its commercial roll-out in Hestfjord, with preparations for tether testing underway.
As for ensuring reliability in production performance and critical subsystem interactions, Minesto is focused on refining operational procedures and documentation. This foundational work prepares the company for the transition to larger commercial operations, addressing both internal and external operational dynamics.
Dr. Edlund summarized, “Our technical and commercial development endeavors are aligned towards one natural progression – the array build-out.” This strategic step symbolizes a commitment to harnessing tidal energy's potential while revolutionizing the marine energy sector.
In conclusion, Minesto is not just laying the groundwork for future tidal energy implementation but is paving the way for sustainable ocean energy solutions that could redefine global energy paradigms.
