Huntington Bank's Commitment to the Westside Community
In a significant move to boost community support, Huntington National Bank has announced a commitment of $1 million through the Huntington Bank Community Foundation to the Westside Future Fund (WFF). This investment is aimed at enhancing key initiatives such as down payment assistance, housing stability, and financial literacy education specifically targeted towards the historic Westside neighborhood of Atlanta.
The funding comes as an addition to the existing support that WFF has already received from Cadence Bank, which recently merged with Huntington, further establishing the strong ties between the bank and the community it serves. Randy Schultz, Huntington's regional president for Atlanta, expressed pride in continuing Cadence's legacy by supporting initiatives that foster strong community growth and development. This commitment is part of Huntington’s broader mission to strengthen the economic vitality and empowerment of the communities it serves.
Created in 2014, the Westside Future Fund is a nonprofit organization focused on the revitalization of five historic neighborhoods: Ashview Heights, Atlanta University Center, English Avenue, Just Us, and Vine City. This non-profit is committed to renovating the area while ensuring that long-time residents are not displaced, a principle that aligns with the vision set by local residents themselves. WFF’s work is crucial, addressing critical issues such as homeownership, housing stability, and providing essential financial knowledge to families.
The allocated funds from Huntington Bank will be equally divided among three WFF programs designed to empower individuals and families earning less than 80% of the area's median family income. Specifically, the funds will assist in providing down payment help for prospective homebuyers, offering rental assistance, supporting an anti-displacement tax fund, and facilitating financial literacy counseling sessions.
John Ahmann, president and CEO of WFF, expressed gratitude towards the Huntington Bank Community Foundation, recognizing the profound impact this investment will have on the community. He stated, “This support will meaningfully expand resources for homeownership, housing stability, and financial literacy education after listening to the priorities that residents have shaped.”
Huntington’s investment highlights a trend in the banking industry where institutions are increasingly focusing on corporate social responsibility initiatives. By prioritizing communities, banks like Huntington aim to enact positive changes and provide tangible benefits that empower residents economically.
The Westside neighborhoods of Atlanta hold a rich history and cultural significance, making these efforts even more vital for preserving its legacy. Community members are hopeful that Huntington’s investment will help lay the groundwork for sustained growth and stability, providing households with the necessary resources to thrive.
