Discover the Wonders of Fossils: A Special Event in Tokyo
The Minamisanriku Tourism Association is thrilled to announce a limited-time fossil experience event taking place in Tokyo from May 4 to May 6, 2026. Hosted at the engaging scientific experience facility, IMAGINUS, in Suginami, this event promises a unique opportunity for families to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of fossils with a theme of "finding, learning, and taking home." This event aligns with the aim to showcase the rich fossil resources of Minamisanriku, and what better way than to bring this experience directly to the urban populace?
Event Overview
The event titled "You Can Be a Researcher! Family Fossil Excavation Challenge at IMAGINUS" invites children and parents to delve into the secrets of paleontology. It will be hosted from 10 am to 4 pm each day, with no prior registration necessary; just show up on the day!
The locale of this event, Minamisanriku, is renowned for its astonishing fossil resources, including some of the oldest fish fossils from the ichthyosaur and mysterious organisms known as "nautiloids." Participants will not only make exciting discoveries but also engage in scientific learning about their local environment through hands-on activities.
Workshop Highlights
One of the main attractions is the
Minamisanriku Fossil Lab. Families can engage in activities such as creating replica specimens and participating in simulated excavation experiences. This program allows participants to feel like real researchers working to uncover the mysteries of dinosaurs and ancient life forms.
- - Cost: 1,500 JPY per participant (accompanying adult for 500 JPY; free for pre-school children)
- - Session Times: Three sessions daily (10:30, 13:00, 14:30)
- - Duration: Each session lasts about 45 minutes

Throughout the event duration, various activities will be continuously available.

Unearth fossils and minerals hidden within excavation blocks. All discovered items can be taken home!

Together with these activities, visitors can enjoy a fossil gacha (a capsule toy vending system) and fossil fortune-telling during the event, making this a thrilling experience fully packed with interesting activities.

About IMAGINUS
Opened in October 2023, IMAGINUS occupies the site of the former Sugiyama Fourth Elementary School. This facility is dedicated to making science enjoyable and accessible to everyone, hosting workshops and experimental classes for ages as young as four. Monthly events exceed 20 types, making science an engaging part of daily life to encourage curiosity and learning.
