A New Chapter in Performing Arts at Tama Art University: Introducing 'VIVI'
Tama Art University, located in Hachioji and Setagaya in Tokyo, has launched an exciting new project called the "Tama Theater Project VIVI". This initiative aims to project the art of performance into the world, emphasizing a unique collaboration between student performers selected through auditions and accomplished faculty artists who are active in the forefront of performing arts.
Celebrating 90 Years of Art with an Inspiring Premiere
The first production, titled "Art Mother", will commemorate the university's 90th anniversary and is scheduled for September 2025. This innovative endeavor brings together a stellar cast and creative team, headlined by associate professor Yukinosuke Itoi, who will be writing a brand new piece specifically for this project. Itoi will be joined by fellow department members, including Yukio Shiba, who will serve as a dramaturg, and Ryohei Kondo, who will provide choreography for the show. Notably, Kiho Nogami will take center stage, performing alongside 15 selected students.
This collaboration of faculty artists and students creates a refreshing ensemble that breaks the conventional boundaries of theater and dance. The project represents a pioneering effort by Tama Art University to create a new form of performance art that promises to be unlike anything seen before.
Empowering the Next Generation of Artists
In this production, students will not only act but also take on critical roles in production aspects such as set design, costumes, and lighting. They will be selected through an internal competition, allowing them to contribute to the project as "planners" in their respective fields of expertise. This model embodies the philosophy of the Theater and Dance Design Department, which strives to integrate creativity and dissemination, fostering the growth of the next generation of artists through practical experience. This opportunity allows students to assume a central creative role, gaining real-world experience akin to that found in professional settings. The moments of revelation where new talents emerge to lead the future of performing arts are moments to eagerly anticipate.
The Manifesto of 'VIVI': A Bold Challenge to Transform Tomorrow's World
The term "VIVI" signifies a transmission of something that resonates vibrantly, shattering norms and shining with brilliance. In a world often stifled by monotony, the collaboration of young students and seasoned artists aims to shake the foundations of our reality. This innovative undertaking invites everyone to witness and support a new vision that will provoke thought and challenge perceptions.
