VESA Introduces Higher Performance Standards for Gamers and Creators at CES 2025
The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has just made significant strides in display technology with the unveiling of updated performance standards aimed at enhancing the user experience for gamers and content creators alike. Announced on December 30, 2024, these updates introduce new performance levels to VESA’s ClearMR (Clear Motion Ratio) standard and the DisplayHDR True Black standard, representing a notable advancement in front-of-screen technologies intended to optimize display quality.
The ClearMR standard, first launched in 2022, has gained traction among manufacturers and users, particularly for its ability to provide a quantifiable measure of motion blur in displays. With the latest updates, VESA has added new tiers—specifically ClearMR 15000, ClearMR 18000, and ClearMR 21000. These tiers are designed to cater to the latest ultra-high-refresh-rate monitors, such as those boasting refresh rates of 480 Hz and above, ensuring that competitive gamers have access to equipment that minimizes motion blur and enhances image clarity.
Roland Wooster, chairman of the VESA task group for these standards, emphasized the growing significance of ClearMR, which utilizes a ratio to express the clarity of motion as a percentage of clear pixels versus blurry pixels. This allows users to more effectively compare different monitors and choose the one that best meets their need for performance.
In addition to the advancements in the ClearMR specifications, VESA announced a new performance tier for the DisplayHDR True Black standard, which is key for professionals engaged in video creation, gaming, and content consumption. The new 1000 luminance performance tier affirms that OLED displays can now achieve peak brightness levels equivalent to 1000 nits. This breakthrough feature not only enhances the vividness of HDR content but also ensures that displays can accurately represent deep blacks alongside bright tones, which is essential for quality content production.
The latest performance updates will be showcased at the upcoming CES 2025, scheduled for January 7 to 10 in Las Vegas. There, several tech giants, including GIGABYTE and LG, will exhibit their products certified to the new standards. For instance, LG's UltraGear™ OLED 480Hz Gaming Monitor has achieved ClearMR 21000 certification, ensuring top-tier motion clarity tailored specifically for the fast-paced gaming environment. GIGABYTE, too, is committed to integrating these updated standards into its flagship gaming monitors for 2025, enhancing the user experience with smoother, blur-free visuals.
VESA's ongoing collaboration with display manufacturers and hardware innovators is driving the industry's push for better-quality display products, ensuring that consumers and content creators can make informed choices based on reliable performance metrics. As the demand for high-quality displays escalates, VESA’s initiatives provide crucial benchmarks that not only validate the performance of these products but also reinforce the association's role as a leader in display technology. Their efforts continue to foster an ecosystem where informed consumer choices and enhanced visual experiences are paramount for everyone from casual users to professional creators.
For those attending CES and wanting to gain deeper insights into these developments, VIP tours of the VESA suite will be available, offering a firsthand look at new product demonstrations and an opportunity to engage with the executives behind these innovative standards.
