Erica Richardson Elevated to Chief of Staff at Investment Company Institute

Erica Richardson Takes a Major Step at Investment Company Institute

In a significant development, the Investment Company Institute (ICI) has announced the promotion of Erica Elliott Richardson to the position of Chief of Staff, working closely with President and CEO Eric Pan. Effective February 10, 2025, Richardson retains her existing role as Chief Strategic Communications Officer while now overseeing the organization's advocacy and external affairs initiatives across various departments.

Richardson, who previously served as a senior staff member during the Trump Administration and at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), brings a wealth of experience to her new position. According to Eric Pan, this new role will empower Richardson to enhance ICI's advocacy efforts before government authorities and in the public eye. Pan expressed his confidence in Richardson's ability to leverage ICI's strengths in its mission to advocate for investors and the fund industry.

In her own words, Richardson stated, "ICI has long been a pillar in the financial landscape, advocating for the interests of the middle class. My focus will be on ensuring that the efforts of ICI align closely with contributing to a robust economic recovery, particularly under the evolving political landscape."

A Proven Track Record

Erica Richardson has a rich history of achievements within the public relations and communications sectors, especially relating to financial services and public policy. Under her leadership, the strategic communications team at ICI has successfully navigated complex issues, launching initiatives such as the Secure Financial Future campaign aimed at bolstering retail investor advocacy. This campaign has garnered a vast network of supporters, emphasizing ICI's commitment to elevating the voices of everyday investors.

Most recently, Richardson has spearheaded the Help U.S. Retire initiative, which was launched in preparation for upcoming tax debates in Congress. ICI's efforts have not gone unnoticed, with accolades such as being named a top workplace by PRWeek for two consecutive years. Richardson herself has received recognition from Ragan PR as one of the Top Women in Communications, marking her as a leading figure in the industry.

Extensive Experience in Government and Politics

With over two decades in public affairs, Richardson’s portfolio is impressive. Previously, she functioned as the spokesperson for Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, advising on communications for key legislative initiatives. Her time on Capitol Hill intersects with some of the most significant events in recent financial history, including the 2007-2009 financial crisis and the Dodd-Frank legislative process.

Before joining ICI, Richardson laid the foundation for the financial services public affairs division at FTI Consulting's Washington, D.C. office. Here, she counseled clients on navigating the complex landscape of public policy and communications in the finance sector.

Richardson holds an undergraduate and master's degree from Auburn University and has completed her doctorate in law and policy at Northeastern University.

Looking Ahead

The promotion of Erica Richardson as Chief of Staff is seen as a strategic move for ICI, reinforcing its advocacy position in the financial sector while addressing the interests of retail investors on a national scale. Her proven expertise and influential background will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping how ICI interacts with the new administration and Congress, ensuring that the needs of American investors remain a prominent focus in the evolving economic landscape.

The Investment Company Institute stands poised to continue its legacy of defending the interests of investors, and with Richardson at the helm, its advocacy efforts are expected to be more cohesive and effective than ever.
