Electrified Thermal Solutions Achieves 20-Year Validation for Thermal Battery Materials

Electrified Thermal Solutions, recognized as a leader in the realm of electric heating and thermal energy storage in industry, recently announced a significant milestone. They received independent validation from DNV, an esteemed engineering firm, regarding the 20-year lifespan of the essential materials in their Joule Hive™ Thermal Battery. This third-party endorsement is critical for both industrial customers and project financiers looking for reliable, long-term performance assessments of new technologies.

The validation from DNV confirms that the core components of the Joule Hive Thermal Battery are robust enough to handle the durability demands typically expected in industrial applications. The evaluation focused on several key elements, including the electrically conductive firebrick, surrounding refractory materials that offer structural and thermal support, and the interface which transfers power from the electrical grid into the battery system. DNV meticulously analyzed thermal, mechanical, and electrical test results along with engineering calculations, ultimately concluding that the claims made by Electrified Thermal Solutions are technically sound within the planned operational parameters.

"This report is a testament to our commitment to delivering sustainable heating solutions that can not only withstand seasonal fluctuations but can perform reliably for decades," stated Joey Kabel, the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Electrified Thermal Solutions. The validation gives customers the assurance they need to trust in the Joule Hive's performance for years to come.

The Joule Hive Thermal Battery employs a cutting-edge design that enables it to store electricity in the form of heat within its ceramic bricks, achieving temperatures as high as 1,800°C (3,275°F). This technology can accommodate a range of electricity supply from 480V to 100kV. Upon demand, air flows through the brick channels to deliver heat to furnaces, kilns, or boilers, with the flexibility to adjust output temperatures between 200°C and 1,800°C.

Currently, a 20 MWh commercial-scale Joule Hive system is operational at the Southwest Research Institute located in San Antonio, Texas. Electrified Thermal Solutions operates from its headquarters in Charlestown, Massachusetts, where they continue to innovate and advance the technology necessary for zero-carbon industrial heat.

With over 12 years of intensive research at MIT and backing from major global industrial players such as Holcim, Vale, and ArcelorMittal, Electrified Thermal Solutions is making significant strides in the electric heating sector. The advanced thermal battery technology they have developed not only aims to revolutionize the way industrial heat is generated but also emphasizes a transition toward cleaner energy practices. By converting and storing clean electricity into heat, these thermal batteries present a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, enhancing energy security and resilience in industrial environments.
