Marking the Significance of Thanks, Birth Control Day: A Call for Access and Education

The Importance of Thanks, Birth Control Day

On November 12th, Power to Decide will celebrate the 13th installment of Thanks, Birth Control Day. This day is more than just a date on the calendar; it serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing need to protect and expand access to contraception. Amidst increasing political challenges to reproductive rights, this event underscores the significance of informed choices and the resources necessary for individual autonomy.

For over a decade, #ThxBirthControl Day has ignited discussions across social media platforms and beyond, shedding light on the opportunities and freedoms that access to birth control provides. Through personal stories, educational outreach, and persistent advocacy, Power to Decide strives to ensure that everyone has the necessary information and resources to make informed choices regarding their reproductive health.

Rachel Fey, Interim Co-CEO at Power to Decide, emphasizes, “Access to birth control is fundamental to people's health, autonomy, and futures which has never been more crucial. The ability to determine what is right for one's body should not hinge on geographical location, income, or personal situations. This day serves as a powerful reminder that birth control is essential healthcare.”

Despite its importance, many young people encounter numerous barriers when it comes to accessing contraceptives. Recent data reveals that misinformation is rampant, creating confusion and fear. The Youth Reproductive Health Access (YouR HeAlth) Survey highlights alarming trends among young people, including a lack of essential knowledge about contraception.

For instance, only 23% of young people understand that there is no medical necessity to take breaks from birth control pills. In fact, it is perfectly safe to use these pills over extended periods unless an individual desires to get pregnant or opts for a different method. Additionally, 51.3% of youths express concerns about the potential side effects of birth control, despite the long history of safe contraceptive options available.

Equally concerning is the fear held by 34.9% of young individuals that utilizing birth control might hinder their chances of conceiving in the future. It's critical to note that all reversible contraceptives, including pills, patches, IUDs, and implants, are designed to prevent pregnancy only during their use and do not have lasting effects on fertility once they are discontinued.

Fey reflects on these gaps in knowledge, stating, “The prevalence of misinformation surrounding birth control is troubling. When young people are exposed to myths that circulate unchecked, they may develop fear and uncertainty, which deters them from making informed decisions regarding their reproductive health. This is why we at Power to Decide provide reliable, science-based information through our platform, Bedsider.”

Bedsider.org serves as a digital resource aimed at demystifying contraception. It features the Method Explorer, which offers clear, factual insights into every available contraceptive option, helping users identify what works best for their needs. Furthermore, the site provides a Clinic Finder to connect users to local health providers, ensuring that assistance is readily accessible.

As Thanks, Birth Control Day approaches, we encourage everyone to reflect on the transformative impact that birth control has had in their lives. We urge the community to stand united in advocating for the necessary access and freedoms required for everyone to achieve their reproductive well-being.

Power to Decide is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health for all. They provide trusted information, enhance access to quality services, and aim to create a cultural shift around reproductive rights.

In celebrating Thanks, Birth Control Day, we take a moment to recognize the strides made in reproductive health access while also acknowledging the ongoing challenges that must be addressed. Let us unite in advocacy and education, ensuring that everyone has the information and resources they need to exercise their reproductive rights fully.
