Terra Charge Expands EV Infrastructure in Gunma Prefecture
In a groundbreaking move for electric vehicle (EV) charging, Terra Charge, a Tokyo-based company specializing in EV charging solutions, has installed a fast charging station at the Self-Service Egaki SS. This service, available at one of Gunma Prefecture’s top oil distributors—Akai Shoji—is notably the first of its kind at a gasoline station in the region. This endeavor reflects the growing commitment to support next-generation mobility amidst a transition in energy consumption.
Background on EV Charging Expansion
As the world accelerates toward carbon neutrality by 2050, the push for EV adoption and charging infrastructure expansion is of paramount importance. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry aims to install 300,000 EV chargers by 2030, signifying a vital need for a robust charging environment nationwide. Currently, approximately 68,000 chargers are installed across Japan, and Terra Charge aims to become a significant player in this infrastructure network.
This new installation enables users of electric vehicles, historically overlooked at gas stations primarily serving gasoline vehicles, to access a speedy 50 kW charging environment. With the increasing number of EVs on the road, having a well-distributed and accessible charging network is crucial.

Commitment to Reliable Service
One of the significant advantages of the Terra Charge service includes no initial, maintenance, or operational costs for the installation site. By employing Japanese-made hardware, the risk of parts shortages is significantly reduced. On top of that, users benefit from a 24/7 call center and integrated payment and management functionalities. This level of reliability and comprehensive post-maintenance support ensures a user-friendly experience for both operators and users, providing peace of mind while using the service.
Quotes from Akai Shoji’s President
Keiko Akai, President of Akai Shoji, remarked, “Since our inception in 1951, we have continuously supplied energy to support the community. As we face a critical transition period towards decarbonization and carbon neutrality, we recognize the need to adapt. The installation of the Terra Charge service at our gas station is not only a response to this changing landscape but also aligns with our vision of solving societal challenges.”
User-Friendly App Enhancements
Terra Charge has also upgraded its mobile application for both iOS and Android platforms, focusing on intuitive design and usability. Users can now conveniently access charging services without app installation through a guest mode that allows QR code scanning. This feature aims to provide a seamless experience when charging their EVs.
Future of EV Charging Infrastructure
As the popularity of EVs grows, establishing readily available fast-charging stations becomes crucial for the expansion of EV usage. Gas stations, due to their optimal locations and accessibility, are ideally positioned to integrate EV charging infrastructure.
Terra Charge has previously installed charging solutions at commercial, public, and hospitality venues. The latest installation at the Self-Service Egaki SS exemplifies how existing fuel supply stations can evolve to meet the demands of electric mobility, enhancing local mobility infrastructure.
