AAOS Welcomes New Orthopaedic Research Excellence Awards to Honor Innovation in Musculoskeletal Care

Introducing the Orthopaedic Research Excellence Awards (OREA)

On July 8, 2025, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) announced an exciting new initiative: the Orthopaedic Research Excellence Awards (OREA). This innovative awards program aims to recognize remarkable contributions in the field of musculoskeletal research, demonstrating AAOS' ongoing dedication to enhancing patient care through impactful findings and advances.

As the AAOS transitions from its previous Kappa Delta Awards to OREA, the focus has shifted towards celebrating not just recognition, but a reaffirmation of the profession's commitment to scientific exploration, groundbreaking discoveries, and improving lives through orthopaedic practice. This change is prompted by the need to elevate research and honor those who significantly shape the future of orthopaedic medicine.

Dr. David S. Jevsevar, Chairman of the AAOS Research and Quality Council, commented on the importance of this transition: “The OREA represent a vital step in our mission to advance the orthopaedic field. It’s not just about acknowledging excellence; it is about reinforcing our commitment to the continuous journey of discovery and innovation.” He emphasized that honoring outstanding work in clinical, translational, and basic science research will enhance the knowledge base driving musculoskeletal care.

The Structure of the OREA

The newly established program builds its foundation on a rich history of excellence, continuing the tradition of honoring extraordinary musculoskeletal research. It includes three distinct AAOS Research Awards, alongside the well-respected Clinical Research Award given by the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).

Applications and nominations for the OREA are currently open until August 31, 2025. This is a golden opportunity for researchers and practitioners to showcase projects that significantly contribute to advancements in orthopaedics.

Award recipients will be celebrated at the prestigious AAOS Annual Meeting in New Orleans in 2026, further amplifying the importance of their contributions to musculoskeletal health.

For those looking to learn more about the eligibility criteria or who wish to submit their applications, comprehensive details are available on the AAOS Research Awards webpage.
