Indulge in Luxurious Leisure on the Sea with guntû: A Unique Travel Experience

Experience the Serenity Afloat on guntû

JR East View Tourism & Sales has introduced an unparalleled travel package that allows guests to stay at guntû, a floating inn on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea, along with a visit to Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama. This exclusive experience is set to depart on February 4, 2026. The package is priced at 990,000 yen for one adult sharing a room for two, accommodating a maximum of four guests with a minimum of two required to operate. This unique offering promises a soothing getaway where time is suspended, allowing travelers to enjoy the breathtaking beauty and rich traditions of Setouchi.

An Overview of guntû

The name "guntû" is derived from the local dialect word for a small crab found in the Bungo region, symbolizing the intimate connection with the local community and history. As guests embark on this journey, the aim is for them to absorb the flavors of Setouchi’s culture, traditions, and nature, reflecting the humble charm, precisely like the small crab it’s named after.

Guntû boasts an architectural design by renowned architect Yasushi Horibe, which harmonizes with the sea and sky through its striking silver-colored hull. Onboard, travelers can enjoy 17 luxurious guest rooms, all featuring private terraces where they can soak in the stunning seascape. Additionally, the ship offers a dining area where the motto is "enjoy what you love and as much as you want,” a sushi counter with ocean views, and relaxing lounges lit softly through shoji screens. Guests can also unwind in the hot baths made of fragrant cypress with sauna facilities, providing an utterly rejuvenating space.

Journeying through Setouchi’s Treasures

As part of the travel package, guests will embark on private excursions to explore the exquisite landmarks of Setouchi. One highlight is the Jinkō-ji Zen and Garden Museum, which showcases the philosophy of Zen through modern architecture and garden artistry. Visitors will be captivated by serene stone gardens and the vibrant reflections of nature in the waterways, leading them into a realm of tranquility. After exploring the grounds, guests can enjoy a delightful vegetarian meal featuring the museum’s signature Jinkō-ji Udon, crafted to embody the essence of Zen culinary traditions.

Relaxation at Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama

The journey continues at Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama, where guests can experience a blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern comforts. The ryokan offers rooms that overlook the Onomichi Strait, enveloped by serene gardens that instill a sense of calmness. Accommodations include either the rustic charm of the thatched-roof Wara no Ie or the refined Ume no Ma built in a sukiya style, both offering timber warmth and private open-air baths for leisurely relaxation.

Gourmet dining at the ryokan includes an exquisite French dinner and a traditional Japanese breakfast, ensuring each meal is a celebration of local flavors enjoyed in an exquisite setting, enhancing the luxuriously laid-back atmosphere.
