Nemours Children's Health Appoints Laura Kowal as New President for Delaware Valley Region

On March 24, 2026, Nemours Children's Health made a significant announcement, appointing Laura Kowal, MPT, JD, as the President for the Delaware Valley region. This leadership transition comes at a time when the healthcare organization is focused on expanding its impact on pediatric care.

Laura Kowal has over a decade of leadership experience with Nemours and has been an integral part of the organization, serving in various capacities. Since July 2025, she has held the title of interim Delaware Valley President. Most notably, Kowal has been the Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary since 2020. Her diverse background blends clinical, legal, and business perspectives, essential for meeting the multifaceted challenges of delivering healthcare to children.

In expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Kowal emphasized, "Nemours Children's has a 90-year track record of excellence in Delaware. I am honored to build on our legacy, continuing to offer nationally recognized care while driving optimal health outcomes for children. While we focus on clinical excellence, our commitment extends beyond the hospital walls, reflecting our holistic approach to pediatric health."

Mark Mumford, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Nemours, endorsed Kowal's appointment, stating, "Laura offers a distinctive combination of clinical experience, business acumen, and legal expertise that will significantly impact pediatric healthcare in the Delaware Valley. " He underscored her extensive leadership experience within the organization and her deep understanding of the region's healthcare landscape as critical assets.

Before her tenure at Nemours, Kowal practiced health law at Ballard Spahr LLP, which provided her with a strong legal foundation and an understanding of the complexities inherent in healthcare systems. She is a Vanderbilt University alumna and holds a Master of Physical Therapy degree from Drexel University. Her 12 years of experience as a physical therapist and certified wound care specialist laid a solid groundwork for her transition into the legal realm, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland School of Law, with a specialization in health law.

Beyond her roles at Nemours, Kowal has actively contributed to the American Health Law Association (AHLA), participating in the development of their Health Law Curriculum Manual, which illustrates her commitment to advancing healthcare law education.

Nemours Children's Health is one of the largest multistate pediatric health systems in the United States. It operates two dedicated children's hospitals and a network of over 70 primary and specialty care practices, establishing a robust infrastructure for pediatric healthcare. The organization is on a mission to transform child health with a holistic care model that integrates innovative treatments while addressing needs that extend beyond immediate medical care. We can also see this commitment through their acclaimed podcast, Well Beyond Medicine, which explores various aspects of whole child health.

The Nemours Foundation, known for its philanthropic endeavors and commitment to children's healthcare, also plays a vital role in supporting the mission of Nemours Children's Health. Through clinical care, advocacy, education, and research, Nemours aims to improve the well-being of children not just in Delaware but across the communities it serves.

As Laura Kowal steps into her new position, many are hopeful that her leadership will usher in fresh advancements in pediatric health, contributing to the enduring mission of Nebours Children's Health, a legacy built on excellence, compassion, and innovation for the youngest and most vulnerable members of society.
