Empowering Youth: Orion Greene's Campaign for Blood Cancer Awareness and Research

Orion Greene Recognized as National Student Visionary of the Year

In a remarkable show of philanthropy and commitment, 16-year-old Orion Greene from San Rafael, California, has garnered attention for his exceptional efforts in blood cancer research and advocacy. Named the 2026 National Student Visionary of the Year by Blood Cancer United, Orion led an impressive fundraising campaign that collected over $1,234,579 to aid blood cancer research, patient services, and advocacy efforts across the nation. This campaign not only reflects personal dedication but also highlights the incredible potential young individuals have to effect change in their communities.

Orion's journey began with a focus on honoring his late father, John Greene, a former board member of Blood Cancer United. John dedicated much of his life to combating blood cancer, undergoing multiple treatments over many years, including three stem cell transplants. His advocacy work facilitated the raising of over $8 million for cancer support and research. Sadly, John passed away in November 2025, but his spirit lives on through his son’s dedicated efforts and the relationships he built within the organization.

Before his passing, John inspired Orion to pursue a unique and engaging approach to fundraising, one that Orion embodied through his campaign, aptly named "Greene Goblins." Together with his team of schoolmates, they distinguished themselves by engaging the community creatively and raising funds in innovative ways. One standout idea was a custom merchandise line inspired by John's love of piano and the family's cat, Katniss. This merchandise was not only sold online but also at John’s Celebration of Life event, turning a moment of grief into one of positivity and community support.

Speaking on the impact of his campaign, Orion shared, "I’m beyond proud to carry on my dad's legacy through this campaign. I'm driven to support other families facing blood cancer so that one day, no one has to grow up without the people they love." This profound statement encapsulates the emotional essence of his efforts. The fundraising campaign also received an honorary contribution from Salesforce, recognizing John Greene, which was announced at John’s Celebration of Life, further showcasing the community's bond and commitment to this cause.

The Greene family's long association with Blood Cancer United has been characterized by grassroots involvement, from community walks to bake sales. Orion’s brother, Floyd Greene, also participated in the Student Visionaries of the Year program, highlighting a family legacy of philanthropic engagement. The enthusiastic response to their initiatives has inspired many others, proving how familial commitment can fuel significant societal impact.

While Orion shined in the spotlight, other participants also excelled in their fundraising endeavors. Team “BE-VALuable for a Cure,” co-led by Isabella Nilio and Valentina DePaço from Villa Walsh Academy in New Jersey, became the runners-up, raising an impressive $715,271. Finishing closely behind, Team “BC We Care,” led by Darian Petillo and Valentina Reale, raised over $700,000, showing a fierce competition driven by compassion and dedication.

Recognition goes also to Gray Shields, an eighth-grader from The Peck School in New Jersey, who was honored as the National Team Member of the Year for raising an outstanding $210,122 as part of his team, "Gunning for a Cure." These accomplishments indicate a thriving movement among young individuals striving to make a difference while honing leadership skills.

The 2026 Student Visionaries of the Year campaign season has been proudly presented by Sunbelt Rentals, a leader in the equipment rental sector, demonstrating corporate recognition of the young people's profound impact on blood cancer advocacy and support.

Conclusion

The Student Visionaries of the Year program continues to foster youth leadership by equipping high school students with real-world skills in fundraising, marketing, and project management. As young leaders step up to tackle pressing health issues like blood cancer, they not only honor the legacies of loved ones lost but also pave the way for a hopeful future where support is accessible for all families confronting these challenges. Through their campaigns, they remind us that hope and healing are rooted in community and shared commitment.
