James Reed Joins Banner Capital Management
Banner Capital Management, a firm specializing in private equity investments that focus on working with family-owned and founder-led businesses in lower-middle markets, has recently announced a significant addition to its team: James Reed has been named as the new Operating Partner and Senior Advisor.
In his new role, Reed will play a crucial part in steering and coordinating the firm’s value generation strategies in close collaboration with the executives of its portfolio companies. He additionally takes the helm as the chairman of Banner’s Operations and Advisory Network, while also serving as the executive chairman of Western Pavement Services—one of Banner’s recently introduced portfolio companies.
Reed comes to Banner with an impressive track record of over 25 years in executive leadership and financial management roles across various sectors, including transportation, technology, and financial services. His previous positions include senior roles at industry giants such as Walmart, Intel, EMC, T-Mobile, and J.P. Morgan Chase.
Notably, Reed was at the forefront of USA Truck, a publicly traded company, where he served as CEO for nearly six years and led the business through a successful strategic transformation that culminated in its acquisition by the German transportation firm D.B. Schenker in September 2022.
Reed holds an MBA in Finance from Brigham Young University, further underscoring his strong financial acumen that will benefit Banner as it aims to enhance the operational effectiveness of its portfolio companies.
Tanner Ainge, Founder and CEO of Banner, expressed his enthusiasm by stating, “We are delighted to welcome James to our team. At Banner, our top priority is to be true partners, assisting management teams through new challenges while preserving the unique attributes that have historically made them successful. This means taking a collaborative and personalized approach to value creation. James provides the experience, humility, and leadership style that align perfectly with this philosophy.”
Reed himself shared his excitement about the new role, saying, “I am passionate about making a positive impact and helping others unlock their full potential. At this stage of my career, I am eager to work with the Banner team and its portfolio companies, especially those embarking on their first chapter with institutional capital. I look forward to helping these businesses grow and create lasting value.”
