KAILAS Celebrates Two Decades of Climbing Exploration in Chengdu

On August 7, KAILAS held a special event in Chengdu to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its Mountain Adventure Project. The occasion was marked by a gathering of renowned climbers, including Jon Otto, Li Zongli, and Alan Rousseau, who came together to share their experiences and discuss the evolution of mountain climbing in China.

Launched in 2006, the KAILAS Mountain Adventure Project has played a crucial role in advancing the climbing community in China. It has empowered local climbers to explore previously unclimbed peaks, develop new routes, and document their unique experiences in the mountains. Over the span of two decades, the project has witnessed a significant shift in the climbing landscape—from following established routes to pioneering new paths in unexplored terrains.

One of the highlights of the event was the discussion surrounding Yaomei Peak, the highest summit of Mount Siguniang. This mountain has been a focal point for many climbers and served as a symbol of exploration and adventure. During their presentations, the climbers shared stories of remarkable ascents and new routes that have emerged over the years. These discussions emphasized how climbers from various generations continue to push the boundaries of what is possible on Yaomei Peak.

Jon Otto, who has dedicated much of his career to mountain exploration and climbing education in China, reflected on the journey of the mountain climbing community. Li Zongli and Liu Junfu recounted their personal experiences with both new and established routes, shedding light on the technical aspects of climbing and the importance of teamwork.
